Aaron Shirley, Syd Kessler and I just finished shooting a jumbo perch TV show on Lake Simcoe, ON. Winds were strong and we were limited to the shorelines we could fish. We started by fishing 2-3′ of water where we only caugth small perch under 7″. We slowly worked our way to deeper water between 4-7′ and finally found scattered jumbo perch anywhere there were off-shore rock pikes.
We all use the Rapala F2 series spinning rods equipped with light action Rapala spinning reels loaded with either Sufix 832, 6 lb. test braid or 4 & 6 lb. test monofilament. The top producing lures were the TriggerX Minnows and Paddle Tail Minnows in the smaller sizes, TriggerX worms cut down to 3″ , and the Vibrotail Minnow, all fished on 1/16 or 1/8 oz. jigheads. Aaron also caugth some nice jumbo perch fishing the Rapala Countdown #3. All our fish were caught when we gently and continously kept reeling in our lures along the bottom.
We all agreed that the perch were scattered over large areas because things are back about 2-weeks this season. In the next few weeks they should start to school-up in the same depth of water. If you love to catch and eat jumbo perch, get ready, some of the best fishing will take place on Lake Simcoe in the next few weeks!
