While most anglers use frozen or live baitfish to catch Snapper & Grouper lately I have hooked so many of both just using a 1-4 oz. vertical jigging spoon on a 60 lb. fluorocarbon leader and braided main line.
The key is to find the fish and that means finding a “hard-bottom”. Most of the Gulf of Mexico is sand-bottom and when you find hard-structure it usually holds some good-size Grouper and Snapper which will readily hit a vertical jig. No slow jigging here. Fast snaps of the rod and the lure working close to the bottom works best!
