Lake trout normally closes at the start of Oct. in Ontario but before the season closes can produce some of the most exciting Laker fishing of the season. Many inland lakes that have healthy populations of Lake Trout offer anglers a great opportunity to target them by vertical jigging over shoals, reefs and bars in open-water. As lakers start to prepare for spawning they start to gather around these structure areas just before “staging” and finding their mates.
Rob Holland had a real thrill when he caught this nice laker in one of the many lakes just north of Kingston, ON.
You can use traditional spoons to jig, vertical jigging spoons similar to those that are used for ice fishing, but one of the most effective presentations is to fish a 3-4″ paddle-tail swim-bait with the right size jighead to get it down to the desired depth.
