Jigging deep-water walleye.

Posted on May 21st, 2016

Looks like post-spawn “recovering” big-walleye have recovered, they are looking healthy and feeding aggressively.

057A6964 Italo_walleye I had the chance to do some “deep-water” jigging for walleye with my good friend Bill Henry using 3/8 oz. jigheads with Lunker City plastic grubs like the famous Fin-S-Fish and Shaker, fishing them vertically right on the bottom.

We started by locating walleye using the Raymarine HybridTouch and actually marked individual fish, then started jigging right on top of the mark and started catching fish.

We used both the Fin-S-Fish jighead and football jigheads to keep our swim-baits on the bottom. The Sufix 832 braid in 20 lb. test really helps to get a fast drop, to jig accurately and to get really good hook-sets into these big-mouth walleye.

One of the reason the walleye are getting healthy fast is the amount of baitfish all around them. You can see in the image above that the baitfish where thick.

Our outfits of choice were the Rapala R-Type spinning outfits in the medium-heavy action loaded with 20 lb. braid and Sufix Fluorocarbon leaders.  Can’t wait to get out again!
