I had the pleasure of fishing with good friends Bill Henry and Jamie Shepherd today on the lower Niagara River. The weather was beautiful, but the fishing was challenging. We headed out around 7:45am and used 3-way rigs to drift spawn-sacks, streamers and live minnows along the bottom. The water was clear with some ice chunks floating on the surface. We did not have our first fish on until about 11am which Jamie hooked using a live minnow. The fish ended up being a chunky 20″ plus female steelhead. Jamie use a Rapala Classic Trout 7′ medium action rod outfitted with a Rapala Seeker spinning reel and Sufix line.
We spoke to a few boat fishermen and a couple of shore fishermen and all confirmed it was a tough day with very few fish caught. This was Jamie’s firsts time fishing the Niagara River from a boat, in the winter time….well done on your catch Jamie!
