Summer Panfish.

Posted on Saturday, July 25, 2020

Our good friend Ed Dolstra who loves to enjoy fresh panfish fries confirms that he continue to catch smaller but still eating-size Crappie, Pumpkinseed and Yellow Perch fishing 5-7′ water in-between sparse weedbeds.

Ed like to go our for a few hrs and used live bait and small jigs with plastic grubs under a float. Summertime panfish may not be as big as the “breeders” in the spring, but still make for a tasty fish fry!

Crankbaits for River Walleye.

Posted on Friday, July 24, 2020

Many anglers have the confidence of trolling for Walleye using crankbaits both in the Great Lakes and in in-land lakes, but few cast & retrieve crankbaits for them during the summer months.

I have some of the best crankbait “casting” success in the middle of summer during the months of July/Aug. when water temps on the surface are over 80F and the air temp can be as high as 90F. To add to this summery weather, my bests success is between 11am to 3pm when there is clear blue skies and the sun is shinning brightly. I know this goes against traditional Walleye strategies where you wake up early or fish just before dark or when it’s windy and overcast out. The Rapala Shad Dancer that dives to 7′ (above), is one of my to producers.

All I can tell you that over 35yrs of casting crankbaits for Walleye in small to large rivers and lakes consistently produces nice size walleye!
