Lake Ontario Lake Trout.

Posted on December 14th, 2022

Our good friends John & Connor Grdosic had a chance to fish after the Dec.1 Lake Trout opener on Lake Ontario near the mouth of the Niagara River and they report that the fishing was excellent.

Lake Trout
John Grdosic holds an average Dec. Lake Ontario lake trout.

Dec. Lakers feed heavily after spawning in the Niagara River and drop-back throughout the river all the way down to Lake Ontario feeding heavily on any available baitfish.

Connor Grdosic holds up a trophy Laker he landed drifting the lower Niagara River.

Most anglers targeting Lakers in the river will drift with a variety of soft-plastics but live 3-4″ baitfish drifted along the bottom work best.

Lake Ontario lakers grow healthy and feed heavily after spawning.

Many anglers will troll crankbaits and spoons to locate their fish once they are at the rivers mouth.

Lake Trout
Trolling, drifting bait near the bottom and jigging soft-plastics are the top techniques to catch hungry Dec. Lake Ontario trout.

When anglers find a concentration of Lakers at the mouth of the river they will often drift or use their electric trolling motors and vertical jig with a 1/2-3/4 oz jighead and 4″ soft-plastic lure.
