Insiders Club Winners join me on the Niagara River as we catch trophy Chinook Salmon.
Posted on October 13th, 2009I had the pleasure today to meet and fish with Rob Rice & Glenn McKenzie, two of the winners of the Insiders Club Fish with Italo Contest. We met at 6:30am on the Niagara Peninsula, packed all of our gear in my truck and headed off to fish the base of Niagara Falls. When we arrived it was just getting light and as we neared the river we could see that the water was still turbid from the strong winds that have been pounding Lake Erie. The visibility was only about 1′. We immediately rigged our rods with Rapala J13 minnows (gold/fluorescent orange and silver/chartreuse), and started fishing. Glenn immediately hooked a Chinook on his first cast and fought the fish for several minutes before it cut his 20 lb. test fluorocarbon leader on one of the submerged rocks. Next, Glenn landed two smallmouth bass on the same lure. Within 20 min., I hooked my first Chinook, fought it for about 3-4 minutes and it too got off. We ended up landing two Chinooks at the base of the falls, one on an fluorescent orange J13, and the other on the willow-blade, large Vibrax spinner (orange/spots). We ended up grabbing a lunch in Niagara Falls, and than headed down to the Whirlpool. We arrived there around 12:20pm and were able to land another Chinook on the fluorescent orange J13. All in all we had a great day. Even though it started off with rain, it cleared up and we were able to get some nice photos of the days fishing.
