Ice anglers are getting onto the ice throughout southern Ontario after the week of cold temperatures. We are getting reports from different locations on the Bay of Quinte. The most recent report is 5″ ice on Big Bay with pressure cracks starting to form. Some parts of the Bay have up to 7″ of ice. A word of caution though, stay away from narrows or bridges where current produces inconsistent ice thickness and even open water throughout the winter.
Anglers that have been getting out there are reporting small catches of smaller eating size fish with some trophies. Fish appear to be scattered. In addition anglers are also reporting herring being caught in the Upper Bay up to 2lb. The forecast of milder temperatures going into Feb. may not help to build more ice.
