Gulf of Mexico Spanish Mackerel.

Posted on August 4th, 2017

There’s nothing quite as exciting as venturing out 10-20 miles into the Gulf of Mexico, FL and spotting schools of Spanish Mackerel feeding on the surface. They can be seen from as far as a 1/2 mile away exploding on the surface and even jumping completely out of the water as they feed.  These feeding frenzies usually only last for an hr or so and we have learned to take advantage of these heavily feeding fish.

On a recent trip I had the pleasure of fishing with good friends Darren Farella and Tyler DeGraff and we stumbled on a large school of surface feeding mackerel. They averaged 3-5 lb. and we all ended up catching our limit. These fish are excellent eating and I can’t wait to share them with friends once I get back to Canada.
