I love to target a variety of Florida Gulf snapper but I have to admit that the Mangrove snapper is one of the toughest to target and catch consistently, especially in larger sizes.
Here’s a couple of reasons why. First, they are very cautions about getting eaten by larger fish and will usually duck under cover and only shoot out to grab a meal. Secondly, when they do bite, it’s so fast and erratic and it’s more common to loose your bait then to hook your snapper. And, lastly, when they fight, they go nuts and often either throw the hook or a larger predator does indeed grab it.
But, if you’re fortunate to land larger ones, not only do they look awesome, they are delicious eating!!
