Gulf of Mexico, Fl Kingfish.
Posted on January 11th, 2018This winter has been one of the most productive for hooking-up on Gulf of Mexico, Fl Kingfish (King Mackerel). Baitfish have been plentiful near-shore and off-shore which has kept voraciously feeding Kingfish in the area. Anglers have been catching them literally form the beach all the way out to almost 100′ depth.
Our strategy of fishing a deep line (30-40′ down), and a flat-line drifted on the surface both rigged with a 5-7″ baitfish has really produced consistently. The bigger Kings in the 30-50 lb. range looks like they went through early and now we are catching many fish in the 5-15 lb. range, ideal eating size!
One problem, many of our smaller Kings have also been targets for hungry Barracuda and Cobia that often take half the mackerel! Only thing that has kept us off the water is the irregular windy weather and resulting rough seas.
