Gulf of Mexico Almaco Jacks.

Posted on December 3rd, 2019

One of the scrappiest fish that we target sometimes fishing in deeper Gulf waters over reefs and wrecks is the “bandit-striped” Almaco Jack.

These fish are schooling predators that can feed in groups from the bottom right up to the surface. Sometimes we’ll catch the odd one drifting with a live baitfish in open water but most of the time we will catch them on live baitfish, cut bait and especially using vertical jigging schools over specific structure. Only issue is that when you get into a school there are usually sharks and even Goliath Groupers around and many times when you hook a Jack while fighting it a larger fish grabs it and usually breaks the line!
