Grouper action, Gulf of Mexico, FL.
Posted on December 19th, 2016Catching Florida Gulf Grouper over a broken-bottom in deep water can be challenging and very satisfying, not just to land trophy size fish, but to also enjoy them fresh on the grill.
On a recent trip with my wife Barbara and our good friend Mike Scarlett we took advantage of good sea conditions and headed out to some of our favorite Grouper spots in about 70′ water.
We all landed good-size Grouper and brought 3-back for some tasty meals. Mike ended up landing the largest Grouper.
Barbara landed several Grouper. Mike broke off two fish and we are suspect that his braid was worn. Both fish took him into bottom structure and were off within 10 sec. of being hooked. Top bait for these larger fish are fresh strips of Squirrel Fish, aka “sand perch”.
