As Lake Ontario water temps rise over 40F baitfish move into the shallows as well as Smelt on their annual spawning run. This is a great time to target in-shore Brown Trout and the occasional salmon.
Brown Trout can be caught as shallow as 30′ either flat-line trolling or using planer-boards to get the line out from the boat. Popular lures are Great Lakes wobbling spoons, casting spoons in the 3/8-1/2 oz. size and wobbling lures like the Jointed Rapala.
Spring salmon are usually out a little deeper in water the is 40-50′ deep. They will be feeding in the water column and the same techniques that work in the summer will work for them in the spring which includes:
-Leadcore and Copper lines
Trolling speed between 2.2-2.8 mph works well. Good areas to target them now is the western basin of Lake Ontario from the mouth of the Niagara River to Grimsby, ON.
