Grand River – Channel Cat Fishing! – First outing of the year was memorable indeed…..
Posted on April 4th, 2011Fishing this past Sunday, April 3 2011 first open water outing down in Dunnville, ON south of the Dunnville dam. Using heavy braid, egg sinker, bead, good heavy duty swivel, fleurocarbon lead and a nice Gamakatsu circle hook with pieces of sucker meat and store bought herring bits in brine. It was a cold morning with the wind picking up midday, air temp upwards of 7 – 8 degrees, water temp at 5 degrees. We fished mainly with our line downwind.
With this being the first open water outing of the year, we may have set a high bar. We had an excellent day, a superb day of fishing with some very nice channel cats being landed throughout the morning and early afternoon. The second largest fish of the day weighed in at 12 lbs caught by Ben Patterson. Not to be outdone, Jeremy Lord landed not only the biggest fish of the day, but also his personal best channel cat ever, at 14 lbs. It was a heck of a fight, with the fish taking the bait and the drag spinning, due to the fish twisting & pulling, this fish was sure full of muscle ! Report sent in by Ben Patterson.
