Florida Saltwater Grunt Action.
Posted on February 23rd, 2022We are having a great time fishing the Gulf of Mexico, FL for a variety of tasty saltwater fish. One of our favorite is the Grunt species which are plentiful and can reach weights of over 15 lbs. Most of the ones we catch are near-shore in 40-50′ of water and average 1-2lb. For me, those are just the right size giving anglers nice fillets.

We normally use our fishfinder to locate a “sticky-bottom” and when that happens we usually mark baitfish over it and also larger fish on bottom. It’s a matter of marking the spot and deploying the electric and setting it on “gps anchor” mode to hold us in position.

Action is usually fast and furious. We use 2 oz egg sinkers rigged on a slider-sinker rig (Carolina Rig) and a #2 size hook on a 20″ leader. One of the best baits for Grunts is a live shrimp fished just off the bottom. Even though Grunts have large mouths, hooking fish is a matter of timing. Grunts are plentiful, they are scrappy for their size and excellent eating.
