When I’m fishing warm saltwater one of the fish I love to target is Grouper. In larger sizes they are a challenge to get off the bottom and into the boat. Among the groupers, the Gag Grouper is one of the most sought-after both for their fighting & eating qualities. You can target them during the day fishing over natural reefs, but one of the best times to hook-up is at night when larger predators are resting.
Recreational fishing seasons for them in Florida are usually short so anglers take advantage of any openings and fish shallower off-shore waters during the winter months and venture further off shore during the summer months. Gags have big appetites and using either a frozen herring or live pinfish or other baitfish works well fished near the bottom. They are so aggressive that they will also “smash” a vertical jigging spoon. If you get a chance to hook-up on a good size Gag you’ll see just how hard they fight!
