April is an excellent time to fish Florida Gulf waters because they become alive with baitfish feeding near bottom and on the surface.
Baitfish schools can be huge and where the batifish are, large predators take advantage of the free buffet.
We normally catch 4-6″ baitfish using a Sabiki rig (a leader that has 5-tippets equipped with small #12 hook/mylar flies). Once you locate the batifish school we just lower the rig, gently move it and in no-time we have several baitfish on.
We rig the baitfish live on a double-hook wire rig and either drift (if the wind is strong enough to keep the baits away from the boat), or we slow-troll the baits with either the electric or outboard. Hits are violent and drags screen as King Mackerel are “smash and run” strikers. They are great sport, can reach weights of over 70 lb. and are delicious eating!
