South Florida Fish of the Month : Spotted Sea Trout

Posted on December 6th, 2012

Are you looking for Spotted Sea Tout this season?  Well this is the month they are plentiful here in South West Florida.

They can be found inshore or near shore over grass and sandy bottoms. And they move into slow moving or still deeper waters in colder weather.

The Spotted Sea Trout is dark grey or green on the upper body with sky blue tinges shading to silver and white on the lower body. They have numerous distinct round black spots on their back extending to the dorsal fins and tails. They have a black margin on the posterior of their tail with no barbels and they have no scales on their soft dorsal fin. They also have one or two prominent canine teeth usually present at the tip of their upper jaw.

They are commonly found here on the west coast of Florida at around 4 pounds and they can live for 8-10 years.
