Fish of the Month: King Mackerel

King Mackerel can range from 5 to 20 pounds in schools and over 50 pounds individually. They are fast and strong fighters. Mackerel are iridescent bluish green; their sides are silvery, their body is streamlined with a tapered head; no black pigment on front of dorsal fin; lateral line starts high and drops sharply below the second dorsal fin; young fish often have yellow spots like those of the Spanish mackerel. They can be found near shore and offshore, occasionally taken from piers running into deep water. They are a schooling fish that migrate from south Florida waters in winter to more northerly waters in spring.
