Fall Walleye & Smallmouth tactics.

Posted on November 3rd, 2021

Fall is one of the best times of the year to target Walleye and Smallmouth Bass that share habits of moving in shallow along shorelines to feed before water temps really drop in early winter.

Our good friend Gabor Horvat has been continuing to enjoy targeting both species in southern Ontario reservoirs. These reservoirs can really fluctuate water levels and the local authorities can take our docks at boat launches early but if the weather is good, they usually leave them in for anglers to be able to launch their boats safely.

Gabor Horvat landed his personal best 9.5 lb. Walleye casting medium-diving crankbaits along reservoir shorelines.

Gabor landed his “personal-best” Walleye fishing a crankbait and casting it close to shoreline breaks. His trophy measured 31″ and weighed 9.5 lb.

Smallmouth Bass will move as shallow as 1′ water in the fall to intercept baitfish. Perfect time to fish shallow-running crankbaits.

Gabor also caught his share of 3-5 lb. Smallmouth Bass fishing the same crankbait along the shoreline breaks.

Our friend Jamie Packer was out fishing a similar pattern on Lake Erie, ON. He fished shelves just out from shore and used tube-jigs and soft-plastic minnows to catch his Smallies.

The Shad Rap in the live-series are ideal in sizes #5 & #7 to fish shorelines where both fall Walleye & Smallies love to feed.

Good crankbaits to fish in the fall are the Rapala Shad Rap Live series that look like real baitfish and have a tight swimming action. The #5 & #7 size is ideal.
