I’m sure I’m not the only one who can’t wait for the upcoming ice fishing season!  If Lake Simcoe’s Lake Trout and Whitefish bite is half as good as was the last few years, well then, this will be yet another solid season!  My clients and I had some phenomenal days on the hard water in the past few years.  On some days, we caught over 20 gorgeous Trout and Whitefish averaging 3 to 8 lbs, and some up to 20+. . .  that can sure be an arm hurting workout!  Some of the anglers who I was out with had success on “hardware” such as vertical body baits, tube jigs and jigging spoons while I had most of my success on live bait.  I prefer to fish a drop shot presentation on a balanced tip up.  However, the bait is key.  Make sure your minnows are lively! As far as the size of minnows go, I run small 2 inch – pinheads – to large 4 to 5 inch Emeralds.  I like to give the fish some options!  Although I can not wait to get out there, I will make sure I check  for some  “solid” ice reports before I venture out.  Sharpen those hooks boys and girls because – A HERE WE GO!!!
