Dicey ice conditions requires extreme caution.

Eager ice anglers are already getting out and fishing anywhere from 2-4″of ice. That thin of ice can be very dangerous and anglers should wait until there is at least 6″ of clear, solid ice.

Here are some tips to keep in mind if you are thinking of fishing some early ice locations:

-check ice thickness close to shore before heading out

-travel light, don’t take to much heavy gear out

-use a spud, no need for a heavier auger or power auger

-if ice is less than 6″ don’t venture out far

-if you’re fishing with more than one person, space yourself out and don’t walk too close together

-wear a body flotation suit

-have ice-spikes in your pocket and a long rope in case you do break through
