One of the best times to take kids for some fresh air around water is in the spring when panfish like Crappie, Pumpkinseed, Bluegill and Rock Bass venture into shallower warmer water.
Josh Westerink takes advantage of the spring Crappie run every year and gets his boy to join him whenever he can. It’s simple fishing time; a light-action rod, light line, sensitive float and a small jig/plastic grub will do the trick. Kids love to be active outdoors and casting and watching a float being sucked-under by a panfish is an adventure to them. Fish don’t have to be big, but it helps to have non-stop action!
