While shooting a cranking Largemouth Bass TV show using crankbaits and twitch-baits off shoreline and large weed flats we came across schools of feeding perch in 1-8′ of water.
Luckily I had some ultralight crankbaits and small soft-plastics/ 1/8oz jigheads and quickly rigged my lightest spinning rod fishing both one after another.
The perch were so shallow in clear water and I was able to see them follow in small schools and strike by baits.
Some of the perch ranged in size from 8-11″ long which are ideal for filleting and enjoying.
Perch like Walleye can really move around in the summer months and can feed as deep as 50′ or as shallow as 1-8′ water. Winds, water temperature and available food are the key items that determine where they will be feeding. In our case we could have caught as many as we wanted but we only kept 19 which fed 7-people and we had leftovers.
