Cooler water, hotter Smallie fishing.

Our good friend Gabor Horvat has been waiting patiently all summer for water temperatures to start dropping in some of southern Ontario reservoirs in anticipation of Smallmouth Bass feeding heavily off the first structure breaks before water temps really start to drop.

While quite a few anglers are still fishing deep for Smallies jigging or fishing live bait at 15-30 feet looking for bass, Gabor has had good success cranking for them in 10-15′ water.

One of my favorite crankbaits to use for early and late season Smallmouth is the Rapala Dives To Series that are designed to dive from 6, 10 or 14 feet. I love to fish these since you can cover lots of water and get very aggressive strikes.
