italo_big_smallmouthThrough our sponsorship relationship with Pioneer Fuels, Canadian Sportfishing provided an auction prize at one of Hamilton’s YMCA fundraisers where Chris & Sarah-Jane Rintoul for the lucky bidders on a Day’s Fishing with me.  Well, it took us quite a while to find a date that worked for all of us, but it finally came to fruition today.  We took advantage of nice weather and head to the Upper Niagara River in Fort Erie, ON.  We met at 8am, ultralight fishing rods rigged with 4″ tube and 1/4 oz. jigheads, and headed north towards Grand Island.  We drifted with the current and fished bars and shoals right in the middle of the Niagara River (Canadian-side), in water that averaged 14-25′ in depth and it didn’t take long for Sarah-Jane to start hooking up on bass.  In fact, Sarah-Jane ended up catching most of which weighed between 3-4 lb..  We took a lunch break from 11:30am – 1pm and had a nice meal at Southsides, right on the Niagara River.  While we ate we met a family that had been trolling on Lake Erie in the morning with crankbaits, but they had no luck.  So, after a short conversation, the Dad was kind enough to take a photo of the 3 of us before we released some of the bass, and than we talked strategy of where they could fish in the River after their meal so that they could also enjoy some tube-jig action.  We headed out again after 1pm and it did not take us long to get into some nice-size fish again.  The action was so hot early an late in the day that on two occasions we landed double-headers of good-size bass.  Chris & Sarah-Jane, I really enjoyed spending the day on the water with the two of you!
