Quite a few steelheaders are getting their first action from either Chinooks that have run into the Lake Ontario tributaries, or migratory brown trout.
The browns that are being caught are already in their beautiful spawning colors. They definitely seem to be associating with the Chinooks and in many cases holding in the deeper runs and pools directly salmon that can be spotted holding in deeper rapids. Single egg imitation and roe-bags have been working well but some browns in the slower water have also been caught on plastic “minnow-imitiatons” drifted on a 3-way rig, or under a float. With the next rain anticipate more brown coming in followed by more steelhead!
