While most anglers are either targeting Walleye, Pike, Lakers, Whitefish or panfish through the ice, our good friend Jeremy Cosco has been having fun with eating-size brook trout.
On a recent ice fishing outing he fished a small spring fed lake in the Plevna, ON area. He caught most the Brookies at around 10 feet depth (bottom was 12 or 13 feet) near the shore at a step rock face.
He also caught a few in shallow 3-5 foot water. He was Jigging small spinners with a tiny piece of worm. He also used a “pickerel rig” with a live minnow on the bottom hook and a piece of worm on the top hook. He reports that this harness was very effective, the motion of the minnow seemed to draw lots of attention from the trout! And they finished their adventure off by having a fresh Brook Trout fish fry the next night with a crispy coating & homemade gluten free batter!
