Good day Italo!since the ice is becoming more safe i’ve been wanting to venture out on Simcoe for Whitefish. Never caught one before and was wondering if you could recommend any areas within walking range. Thanks and keep up the good work!Jim

Hi Jim, thank you for your encouraging words. This early in the season I would suggest you either fish out from Jackson’s Point in about 40-50′ water, or access the ice from the west-side of Lake Simcoe out from Cedar Point (at the mouth of Cooks Bay), where the water drops down to 70′ not too far from shore and you are away from the main lake basin, or our of Jackson’s Point but only to about the 40-50′ depth….God bless you.

Hi Italo I am a big fan of your tv show. I noticed there are very few shows that focus on Western Canada fishing as I am from Alberta and we have many good lakes out this way as well. I was wondering if you ever tried sight ice fishing for whitefish. I can think of no bigger thrill than watching 3lb plus whitefish bite your hook. It makes for very exciting fishing. I invite you out here to experience this to a lake called Gull Lake which is just west of Lacombe, Alberta. There are also nice size perch. pike, burbot, and walleye in this lake as well. I have been going to the same spot for the last 5 years and am never disappointed (yes GPS is a wonderful thing) and I invite you to join me here some time to help promote Alberta lakes and all they have to offer. Thank you for your time and look forward to your reply.

Yes, I have fished/shot TV shows in northern Alberta in the Margret Lake region for lake trout, pike & walleye.

I have also “sight-cast” to whitefish when I was in northern BC in the Caribou mountains and I know how exciting it is. Thank you for the invitation.

Hi Italo. I was wondering if you have fished any lakes in the Minden/Algonquin Highlands that has a good population of whitefish. Ive researched and found some lakes via the mnr FISH-ONLINE tool that have whitefish, but I’m not exactly sure where to start. Any advice you can give me would be much appreciated!

I have only targeted one lake for whitefish south of Minded, Crystal Lake, east of Kinmount, ON. I have not fished it for many years, but in the past it produced many whitefish. Most of us fished the deeper and of the lake and right on the 15-25′ break just off-shore as early in the fishing season as we could get out on the ice.

Whitefish spawn in the fall and sometimes even when you get first, safe ice, they are in large schools close to their spawning areas. We fished 1/4 oz. jigs tipped with a live minnow and also small vertical jigging spoons all fished within 1′ of the bottom.

I live on lake huron and I’ve heard around this time you can catch whitefish closer to shore. Do you think using a casting bubble and fly would be a decent approach?

Posted on April 23rd, 2015

Most of the whitefish that are caught in Lake Huron in the spring when the water is cold are caught off the shorelines and from anglers fishing form small boats fishing near the bottom and using live minnows, jigs like the TriggerX Creatures 4″ Probe worms, and even roe-bags. When mayfly hatches will be happening in the next few weeks and you see whitefish feeding on the surface, you can catch them on flies, but it’s tricky. You have to be close enough to a rising fish to cast immediately to it, otherwise they move on looking for other mayflies that are hatching.

Hello Italo.. What I can see from your blog you had a great day on simcoe last weekjan152011 also. A friend and I also had a wonderful perch filled day on lake simcoe. caught some good 11 12 inchers also ran into some great fighting cisco. always a thrill but me and my fishing partner went for some whitefish today jan 23 2011 but only got some dinky perch that must have been hungry because they were hitting a pretty far sized spoon. We were fishing on the south side of snake island we moved around from 50 to 70 feet of water. I was wondering if we were doing something wrong or should i be using something else rather then my trusty spoon and what would be the best place to start fishing for lake trout on simcoe all your help is very appreciated

Hi Trevor…You were not doing anything wrong, and you were fishing in a good area. I just think it’s a little early in the season for the whitefish to school-up and feed in high numbers. I have had the same report from other anglers and I had the same experience fishing in 70′ for whitefish catching just perch on the Williams Whitefish spoon….kind of strange. I have a feeling that in a few weeks the whitefish fishing will be much better…God bless you, Italo

I watched an ice fishing show for white fish on Lake Simcoe. What is the make and model of the small jigging spoons How do I order them

Posted on March 27th, 2015

Hi Edward….I think you are referring to the Blue Fox Little Foxy Jiggin’ Minnow. I checked the internet and I found the best price for them through mail order from a Canadian sporting store called The Fishing Hole. If you go to, http://www.thefishinhole.com/index.cfm?action=product&se=24707 , you will see the excellent selection and prices. I have produced many ice fishing TV shows catching whitefish and lake trout on a variety of lures. If the one above is not the one you saw, please let me know and I will send you the info on the other spoons I used…God bless you, Italo

Hi Todd…Thank you for your kind words. The lure we used for the Lake Simcoe whitefish was the Blue Fox Lil’ Foxy Jiggin’ Minnow. We were using the 1/4 oz. size in silver/black back & silver/chartreuse back…God bless you, Italo
