Hi Jim, thank you for your encouraging words. This early in the season I would suggest you either fish out from Jackson’s Point in about 40-50′ water, or access the ice from the west-side of Lake Simcoe out from Cedar Point (at the mouth of Cooks Bay), where the water drops down to 70′ not too far from shore and you are away from the main lake basin, or our of Jackson’s Point but only to about the 40-50′ depth….God bless you.

Yes, I have fished/shot TV shows in northern Alberta in the Margret Lake region for lake trout, pike & walleye.

I have also “sight-cast” to whitefish when I was in northern BC in the Caribou mountains and I know how exciting it is. Thank you for the invitation.

I have only targeted one lake for whitefish south of Minded, Crystal Lake, east of Kinmount, ON. I have not fished it for many years, but in the past it produced many whitefish. Most of us fished the deeper and of the lake and right on the 15-25′ break just off-shore as early in the fishing season as we could get out on the ice.

Whitefish spawn in the fall and sometimes even when you get first, safe ice, they are in large schools close to their spawning areas. We fished 1/4 oz. jigs tipped with a live minnow and also small vertical jigging spoons all fished within 1′ of the bottom.

Most of the whitefish that are caught in Lake Huron in the spring when the water is cold are caught off the shorelines and from anglers fishing form small boats fishing near the bottom and using live minnows, jigs like the TriggerX Creatures 4″ Probe worms, and even roe-bags. When mayfly hatches will be happening in the next few weeks and you see whitefish feeding on the surface, you can catch them on flies, but it’s tricky. You have to be close enough to a rising fish to cast immediately to it, otherwise they move on looking for other mayflies that are hatching.

Hi Daniel…I would suggest you use a 1/4 oz. jig (chartreuse/silver, black/silver), with 10 lb. test Rapala Titanium Braid (4 lb. test monofilament diameter)…God bless you, Italo

Hi Trevor…You were not doing anything wrong, and you were fishing in a good area. I just think it’s a little early in the season for the whitefish to school-up and feed in high numbers. I have had the same report from other anglers and I had the same experience fishing in 70′ for whitefish catching just perch on the Williams Whitefish spoon….kind of strange. I have a feeling that in a few weeks the whitefish fishing will be much better…God bless you, Italo

Hi Edward….I think you are referring to the Blue Fox Little Foxy Jiggin’ Minnow. I checked the internet and I found the best price for them through mail order from a Canadian sporting store called The Fishing Hole. If you go to, http://www.thefishinhole.com/index.cfm?action=product&se=24707 , you will see the excellent selection and prices. I have produced many ice fishing TV shows catching whitefish and lake trout on a variety of lures. If the one above is not the one you saw, please let me know and I will send you the info on the other spoons I used…God bless you, Italo
