Hi Andrew, spring and fall splake locations/techniques should be the same.

They should be feeding in the upper water column and along shoreline structure like points, bays and open-water structure around islands, bars and reefs. Same lures should work…God bless you.

Hi Tyler…I would suggest you cast a 1/8 or 1/4 oz. spoon as far as you can and let it flutter to the depth, than retrive it with a stop-and-go action to cover different depths until you find fhe right depth range. You can also cast a Countdown Rapala #7 and do the same thing….God bless you, Italo

Hi Ron…The best time to fish for splake is either thorugh the ice, or in very early spring when the ice just breaks-up. As the water warms, splake behave like lake trout and can roam in deeper water at all depth in surch of food, which can make locating them difficult. For ice fishing most anglers will either fish a “set-line” and bait (live or dead minnows), or they will “vertical-jig” using a variety of smaller spoons/Rapalas that resemble a 2-3″ baitfish. When they ice breaks up anglers will either troll shorelines, or cast with the same lures as above, or they will “still-fish” with minnows, or spawn sacks…God bless you, Italo

Hi Peter….The best thing I can suggest is that you contac the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources head office in Peterborough, ON and ask to speak to the head biologist about any lakes that still offer good splake fishing. As you probably know, a splake is a cross between a lake & brook trout. Unfortunately, if they reproduce, the revert back to one species or the other. The same techniques that work for lake & brook trout will work for splake. Casting spoons, spinners, etc., and trolling them in shallow water early and late in the year, and general ice fishing techniques (live minnows on tip-ups of twig-rigs, or gigging with trout lures)…God bless you, Italo

Hi David…Smaller size lures that look like small fish and other food splake feed on will work well in 10-15′ of water. These would include; Rapala CD 3 & 4, Rapala Ultralight Minnow & Shad, Vibrax #3 spinner, Lucky Strike 1/8 & 1/4 oz. spoons, 1/8 & 1/4 oz. hair jigs and jigs/2″ plastic grub combinations will also work well…God bless you, Italo

Hi Tyler….You wil have a tought time catching splake from shore in the summer time becasue the water will be warm along the shorelines and the splake will be swimming in deeper colder water. The best time to catch splake from shore is in the spring time after the ice melts and the shoreline waters are cold and there is lot’sof food there for the splake to feed on…..God bless you, Italo

Hi Tyler….Near the bottom. Depending on the lake, if the splake are feeding on smaller organisms near the shorelines or around the structure breaks this could be in water as shallow as 3-5′. If the lake has deeper-water species of baitfish the splake could be feeding near the bottom in deeper water up to 30’….God bless you, Italo
