Dear Italo,Continue to enjoy your posts, most often with envy; especially like the recent one with your Dad. . I am here to once again pick your brain if you’ll allow. We are two retired fellows and are planning a trip for next season (probably June). We are from the New England States and have never fished for walleye and northerns. We’ve mostly fished northern Maine for landlocked, lakers and speckles. Anyway, we are considering a drive-to trip to Baker’s Narrows Lodge on Lake Apapapuskow near Flin Flon Manitoba. We have an airline credit to get us to Winnipeg, then would drive from there. Do you know anything about the place or the fishing? As we are retired, we have somewhat limited funds, so most of the fly in’s are a bit too pricey for us. We’d like a fairly remote wilderness place with housekeeping and the chance to target lakers, walleye and pike and we don’t mind driving. Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks Italo and Best Wishes to you and yours. Mark

Hi Mark, thank you for your kind words. I have had excellent fishing in Manitoba but I have not been to Baker’s Narrows Lodge but I am sure you will have excellent fishing…God bless you.

Hi Italo, I’m looking for a drive to fishing lodge in the Cochrane area. Can you give me some places please,I have looked ,but I can’t seem to find any, thanks and God bless.

Hi Russ,  most people from Cochrane, ON fly-out to lakes with Cochrane Air. I don’t know of any lodges near Cochrane either. I have been to a couple of drive-to lodges east of Timmins, ON. Two where I had good fishing were:

-https://www.airivanhoe.com/ from their cabins at the lodge and in their fly-in lodges.

God bless you, Italo.

Hi Italo, we will be hitting lake Wabatongushi north of Wawa in about a week. We’ve never been there. Any tips on walleye and pike? Fella that runs the place said walleye are 20-30ft deep this time of year.

Hi Tom, we shot TV shows there in the 80’s. You should have no problem catching walleye and pike. For walleye I would suggest you fish mostly jigs/bait or jigs/plastic grubs along the bottom. The walleye should be shallow and deep. Fish the edges of any weedbeds that meet open water and shallow/deeper structure like island shorelines, points, bars and shoals. I have a feeling you will catch them shallow early and late in the day (less than 12′), and deeper in the middle of the day (15′-20′). Pike should be around any weeds that are off main shorelines. Smaller “hammer-handle” pike will be in the shallower, weedy bays. The larger pike will be waiting in ambush around weeds in deeper water off main shorelines, island, saddles (weedy bars that join island to shorelines or island to island). Don’t be surprised if you hook some bigger pike fishing for walleye. You may want to run a short wire leader just in case. For pike 3/8 oz spinnerbaits are a go-to near the weeds or a Vibrax #4 and definitely 3/8-1 oz paddle tail plastic swim-baits like the Lunker City Shaker and Swimfish. Hope you have a great trip…God bless you.

Hi Italo. Have you ever considered doing a fishing segment based out of Elim Lodge on Pigeon lake? Would love to help you out with it in any capacity, fishing or amenities at Elim Lodge. Thank you. Chad.

Hi Chad, I have not considered it but I have been there for a father/son fishing weekend with a church I attended. Always open to promote fishing locations and lodges. Let me know who to contact there and I can have someone follow-up…God bless you.

Hi Albert, Sorry you had a bad experience on your last loge trip. In fishing, timing is everything! Not sure what species of fish you are looking for, but if you are OK with lot’s of Walleye & Pike, I would recommend Marmac Lodge, https://marmaclodge.com/  which is 88miles north of Chapleau, ON. You can drive to White River, ON, stay overnight and than take the Bud Train to stop 88. The crew from Marmac Lodge picks you up and takes you by boat to the lodge. Very good fishing, accommodations, guiding and good. Many good-size walleye. Good time to go is June-Aug. If you would like to see TV shows we have done there, just go to, https://youtu.be/xajxOcw7re8?t=5 , and,  https://youtu.be/-HPZkSCtBKA?t=9 ….God bless you.

Hi Italo, My father and I are planning on doing our annual fishing trip this year sometime at the end of August. We are looking for a place to go in northern Ontario for walleye, pike, and bass. Any suggestions on places to go? We don’t mind travelling, but something within 6 hours from Toronto would be great. Thank you in advance!

Hi Jake, Lady Evelynn Lake about 1 1/2 hr north of North Bay, ON is an excellent lake for walleye, smallmouth bass and pike. We have done several TV shows there. There are three lodging/cottages available on the lake. We have stayed at Red Pine Wilderness Lodge, http://www.redpinelodge.com/ , but I know of many anglers that have also enjoyed staying at Ellen Island Camp, http://www.ellenislandcamp.com/ ,  and Garden Island Lodge, http://www.garden-island.com/ . Lady Evelynn Lake is pretty easy to fish for walleye. You can troll, but we usually just fish an 1/8 oz. jighead/worm or minnow near the bottom. I would encourage you to check out our Italo Labignan YouTube channel and type in Red Pine Wilderness Lodge in our search engine and you will see first hand how good the fishing is there…God bless you,

Hi Italo My partner and I are thinking of going up to Dinorwic Lake, Ontario. We have always fished Ontario and are going to be staying at a place called Pine Sunset Lodge. Now I know you have fished all over Ontario and do you have any informationregarding the lake and the area. Bonus if you have done a show up there but we are more concerned with the fishing and the area as it is quite a long drive from our home base Toronto. Thanks for any information you can share with us.John and Nora

Hi John & Nora, I have not fished the lake, but judging from it’s geographic location I have a feeling you will have good fishing there. The fishing will  probably be very similar to Eagle Lake, which is just west of Dinorwic Lake, ON.

You can see how we fished Eagle Lake by going to our Italo Labignan YouTube channel and typing into the search engine “Italo Eagle Lake”.   Hope you have a great trip.
