Hi Italo, Love your show since I was a teen. yep 20 years later I am still watching you on youtube. Anyway, I dont have a boat so I have been trying to look for bank/shore spots that I could fish with kids. Any good suggestions? I am from the GTA so a max of 1.5 hour drive radius would be great. Been thinking of getting a boat but the hassle is just too much at the moment. Want to kids to develop the same interest in outdoor activities. Thank you Italo.

Glad you are continuing to enjoy our Canadian Sportfishing, Here’s the Catch! TV shows and our shows/videos on our YouTube channel. A good location in your driving range is the Welland Recreational Canal right in Welland, ON. It’s approx. 11 km long, 400 yds wide, 30′ deep in the middle with weedlines running both sides of the canal.

Benjamin Chester catching Pumpkinseed off Thorold Rd., Welland Recreational Canal.

It is readily accessible and has many stretches of cut grass and even picnic tables and barbecue stands. It has lots of panfish and also bass & pike. Great place to take kids fishing with just a bobber and worm for panfish, or if they are bigger casting twitch-baits, spinners and shallow diving crankbaits for larger game fish.

Good access areas are from Lincoln St., Thorold Rd…God bless you.

Make sure to check the fishing videos on our Italo Labignan YouTube channel and if you have any questions just email them to me at Ask Italo throughout our website.

HiI am a dad to an 8 year old boy. He has ADD, but has shown interest in fishing from dock when we go to Lake Rosseau. I have gone and seen countless utube videos on how to fish. Not very informative for type of equipment we need. Gone to Canadian tire and Bass Pro. Still confusion. Any idea about affordable starter equipment? And any starter seminars large companies like Rapala do to encourage new fishermen?I have spent two days at each store and found so many new parents and immigrants who were just looking for the same information as me. Yet not much out there unless your parents know how to fish. Can you give some ideas?Thx.

I can understand your frustration. Unfortunately it is very difficult to get specific instruction/help at store levels especially for kids fishing. For decades I have made kids fishing tips that you can see by going to our Italo Labignan YouTube channel. When you go there, just type in Italo kids fishing tips in the search engine. Besides getting information from individuals/videos, I would encourage to check-out a new initiative which I am involved in with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources  & Forestry called “Learn to Fish”. It is specifically run to help young anglers. In this initiative there will be “practical” fish teaching and fishing at Provincial Parks across Ontario. There is also an interactive Learn to Fish trailer that will be used on location throughout the province. To get more info. ,you can go to, http://www.ontarioparks.com/learntocamp/learntofish .

As far as a fishing outfit goes, one of the best ones which I have purchased and used with children the age of your boy is the Rapala 102 Spinning  Combo , that comes with everything your son will need to get fishing. You should be able to find it at Canadian Tire.
