Maribou jigs with lifelike action are excellent to make both trout (steelhead) and salmon strike. In the Great Lakes tributaries I use small 1/16 or 1/8 oz. marabou hair jigs in white, pink & purple color fished under a 9gram float using by center-pin outfit. I work the float like a top-water lure with the current and reeling it slowly in. This gives the jig a very tantalizing action swimming in the water column. I start by fishing it close to the bottom and slowly decrease my lead to fish it upwards until I get a strike.
On Canada’s west coast I use the same color jigs but in a larger 1/2-3/4oz since the rivers are bigger and the runs/pools faster. There I cast our 90-degrees to where I think fish are holding and immediately start “swimming” the jig in the water column back to me reeling continuously and raising my rod tip up and down at the same time. This technique produces very aggressive strikes. My favorite color marabou jig there is hot-pink…God bless you.

Hi Rad, always a good idea to use a loop knot that allows the eye of the jighead free movement when jigging or shaking soft plastic grubs on a jighead. This is really important when using the www.lunkercity.com Fin-S Fish with the flat, Fin-S Fish jighead that really increases the side to side dropping action and the shaking action on the bottom. My favorite know to use is the Rapala Knot…God bless you.

Hi Angler, can make all the difference the world. A soft-plastic grub should always be matched with the right size and configuration jighead for the conditions you are planning on fishing. For example if you target panfish and you plan on using a 1″ curly-tail or tube, the jighead should be anywhere form 1/16-1/8 oz. in size.

On the other hand if you plan on fishing a 4″+ swimbait like a Lunker City Shaker or SwimFish, you need to use at least a 3/8 oz. jighead to get a faster drop/retrieve so that the swimming tail engages. The type of jighead you use is also important. For general purposes a round jighead works well. For a tube, a tube jighead should be used, if you let your jig sit on the bottom in-between jigs, a stand-up jighed will work best, and so on….God bless you.
