Hi Ethan, the best locations I can suggest is the Bay of Quinte fishing out of Pointe Anne once the ice is safe for Walleye. You can walk out from shore about 1km and start fishing in 15-18′ water. Best technique to use there is jigging with a 3/8 oz vertial jigging spoon tipped with a live minnow hooked through the head and fished near the bottom.
For Pike and the chance to catch Walleye also East Lake just 20 min. from Belleville, ON is also good. You can walk out about 1/2 km from Cherry Valley, ON and as soon as you find the edge of the weedline you can either jig similarly as in the Bay of Quinte, or set up “set-lines” with a live 4″ minnow (TipN’Jig Total Ice Fishing System is the best).

Hi George, thank you for your kind words, my pleasure to help anglers. One of my favorite spots to ice fish on the Bay of Quinte is indeed out from Point Anne tight in the middle or the south side of the buoy markers in 15-22′ water. That is the main “bay-channel” and the walleye move up and down near the bottom at that depth. Sometimes there are pressure cracks going out from Point Anne and it can be much safer to go out from Big Island right across from Point Anne. Caution going out from the north-shore and do not head west towards Belleville as Massassauga Narrows always have a current flow and the ice is not safe in-between the two points. I normally jig 3/8 or 1/2 oz. vertiacal jigging spoon with an oversized treble and a live minnow hooked through the head on one of the hooks. It really helps to have an ice-fishing sonar so that you see your lure and any Walleye nearing it and them working the Walleye slowly off the bottom to make it strike…God bless you and have a blessed Christmas celebration.

Hi George, Thank you for your kind words. Joel is a good friend and I have enjoyed fishing with him on many of the Air Ivanhoe outpost camps and even some of his drive to lakes for brook trout, pike and bass….great operation. I get a chance to fish the Detroit River/Lake St. Clair usually the first Sat. in June when we also cover the ICHA Handicapable Fishing Derby right on Windsor’s waterfront. Maybe I’ll see you there on June 1, 2019. I have a very good personal friend who is probably the best trophy walleye ice fishing guy on the Bay of Quinte. I will send you his contact info….God bless you.

Hi Nikola, whenever I ice fish the Bay of Quite I have a portable hut and move around until I find the fish. Here are a few ice hut rentals you can contact:
– http://www.quintefishing.com/baycrest/baycrest.htm , on Big Island. I know they have accomoation and hut rental packages. You would have to call them to see how much just the hut rental would be.
– http://www.fishfindercharters.com/ice_fishing.htm
– Merland Park Cottages, Picton, ON 613-476-6894
-Pete: (613)847-3384
– Kirk: (613)876-2666

Best ice fishing outfits are medium action rods loaded with 10-20 lb. test braided line with a fluorocarbon leader and snap-swivel used with a 1/4 to 1/2 oz vertical jigging spoon or a Jigging Rapala tipped with a minnow. Most people jig for the walleye and have several holes cut in an area and move from one to the other until they start catching fish.

Hi Dean, structure breaks may not be the best locations to find walleye through the ice as it is in the summer months. In the summer months much of their food is located in bays and around shallow/deeper structure breaks, but in the winter time as their food source moves deeper, the walleye tend to feed more in open-water “basins” and especially in the main lake channel of shallower walleye lakes.

I would encourage you to try and locate “flats” that are 15-25′ deep that are in-between structure areas and the deeper parts of the lake. I have a feeling if you locate these winter “food shelf’s”, you will do well with the walleye throughout the day. If you don’t have a fishfinder, you will need to cut many holes and do the “trial & error” depth search with a heavy lure. A hydrographic chart will also be useful to you even if it is a paper chart that shows where the “flats’ are…God bless you.

Hi Mike, the eastern end of Erie has a great spring/summer/fall fishery, but the walleye migrate west as water temperatures drop and unfortunately if you want to catch Erie walleye through the ice, the best fishing is in the western basin and on the Ohio side of the lake.

That is where the habitat is similar to the Bay of Quinte, water is mostly less than 25′ deep and with large flats dissected by navigational channels.
Bay of Quinte still remains your best bet!

Hi Jeff, Quinte for ice fishing is an excellent choice. The walleye there move around a lot and it’s best not to be in a stationary hut. I would strongly suggest you contact a personal friend of mine, Richard Somerville (hardwaterwalleye@hotmail.com ).

I have done many ice TV shows for trophy walleye with Richard. He follows the walleye around especially in Big Bay which ices-over early and usually knows exactly where they are. He has portable ice shelters and can really put you on to fish. When I stay in Belleville, ON I normally just book a room at the Confort Inn since it is walking distance to many restaurants and just a few minutes from the Bay…God bless you.

Hi Mike, Florida was great, can’t wait to go back in April. I got the last update on the Bay conditions and fishing last Sat. while we still had the mild-spell.

Last week there was lot’s of open water and most parts of the Bay were dangerous to access. I would not advise to head out from Pointe Anne. A good friend of mine was fishing the “quiet” water on the south-side of Big Bay accessing it from Horse Pt. and walking east to 18′ water. There was about 5″ of safe ice there. Ice conditions should be better now and improving with the cold temps that have moved in. The bite was early & late, about a 1-2 hr window, mostly smaller fish with a few over 5lb. Stay safe and hope you get a bunch of fish!
