Category: fly fishing trout

Merry Christmas Italo. I am new to fly fishing and am located in souther ontario (Hamilton). Could you direct me to a good fly shop that can affordably set up a beginner with a dozen flies and a couple leaders. I would very much like to stay local and out of downtown Toronto. Or if you could maybe suggest a few styles of flies and advise on leader preferances. I mainly fish great lake tribs. Altho l do fish alot of smaller streams and rivers up to North Bay and over to about Blind River. I watch all your tv shows on wild tv and have been a big fan since l was young. I appreciate all you do and your vast knowlage about fishing. Also I am currently saving for a Ber centerpin/hybred reel, l think thats the sweetest reel ever! Thank you.

Hi Tim, nice to hear from you and thank you for your kind words. Glad you have been enjoying our TV shows for many years. I love to fly fish also and have been blessed to have fly fished in fresh & saltwater. As you probably know, depending on what species of fish you target and the specific body of water, very particular flies will work well at different times of the year. I would suggest you check-out the https://www.grandrivertroutfitters.com/ , or the https://www.grindstoneangling.com/ . Both shops have expert fly fishermen that can help you select the right outfit, flies and accessories you may need.

The Ber reels are some of the highest quality in the world. It’s well worth you saving your money to get a hybrid. I have been using them for trophy saltwater off-shore fish to trout & salmon in freshwater. Amazing reels.

Wishing you and your family a blessed Christmas celebration…God bless you, Italo.

Make sure to check the fishing videos on our Italo Labignan YouTube channel and if you have any questions just email them to me at Ask Italo throughout our www.canadian-sportfishing.com website.

Hi Italo, I enjoy alot of lake ontario trib fly fishing for trout. Living in niagara that always means a long drive. Where would you recommend to do some fly fishing in niagara? Species doesnt matter, just love the fly rod!

Hi Tom, when the salmon/trout are running, I usually head to Upper NY Lake Ontario tribs as early as Oct.

Italo with Canadian Sportfishing Cap - Brown Trout

In Niagara region you can fly fish the Niagara at the Whirlpool, but it can be tough. Right now, best to fish some of the old Welland Canal’s that are in and around St. Catharines/Thorold for mixed warm-water fish; smallies, pike, panifish, sheepshead and carp. All are fun on a fly rod. If you download our UFindFish app., I have marked lot’s of shorefishing locations on those canals….God bless you.

Hi Italo, hope all is well. I am looking into getting my first fly fishing outfit. I would be specifically targeting trout. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks – Ryan

Hi Ryan, best suggestion I can make is that you look into getting a Cortland CRX rod/reel/fly line combo. They are good quality and very affordable. You can see the selection by going to the Rapala 2015 Catalog  , than going to pg. 103. The outfit I would recommend is the 9′, 2-piece, 7/8 weight. To find out the cost and a dealer close to where you live, just email, info@rapala.ca .
