Hi Mkaufmann…It depends what you are planning to fish for and how. For near-shore fish (from the beach or fishing the coral-heads just off the beach), try casting and reeling in top-water lures that skim across the surface (Rapala’s Skitter Walk in chrome color is an excellent choice). The Rapala X-Rap in #12 equipped with saltwater hooks will also work well for a variety of fish. If you purchase some “cuda-tubes”, they will also work well casting along the beach for barracuda, snapper, blue runners (small jacks), etc. If you are planning on fishing any of the shallow flats for bonefish, small 1/8 oz. jigs/natural color plastic grubs in the 1-2″ size will work well. Bucktail jigs in the 1/4 & 3/8 oz. size will also work well for a variety of fish….God bless you, Italo

Hi John…Thank you for your kind words. The best people to ask specific questions you have on tarpon fishing in cuba is either Filippo at, www.avalons.net , or Mike Gifford at, www.countrypleasures.com . Over the last few years I have worked with both individuals to proudce high-quality saltwater fishing programs in Cuba. Avalons operates several fishing lodges off the south-coast of Cuba that offer trophy fishing for tarpon, bonefish, permit, snapper, snook, and much, much, more. Mike Gifford operates a fly shop in Calgary, Alberta and annually takes many people fishing in Cuba. He has worked as our liason and also worked with me on-camera in the production of Cuba fishing shows….God bless you, Italo

Hi John…Those two locations are pretty unique. I am not sure what you will be catching off-shore, could be barracuda, small black fin tuna, mackerel, etc. In-shore there will be bonefish available only if ther are some extensive flats for them to feed on. I have fished in Cuba at Key Largo, Key Coco, Isle of Youth and Gardens of the Queen, but not near Varadero, so I can\’t comment of the fishing available there. Normall fishing guide/charter boat tips are about $20/per person, so if there are two of you, you would give the guide/charter boat $40 for the day as a tip. Tips don\’t necessarily mean that you will get into fish since they are given at the end of the fishing trip. Asking a lot of questions and trying to see if your guide/charter boat is compitent should help in your confidence that you will catch fish…God bless you, Italo

Hi Joel….Your outfit sounds ideal. I would suggest you load it with one of www.cortlandline.com , saltwater taper WFFL. Take a good assortment of Crazy Charlie & Clouser Minnow flies and you should be able to fish any conditions you encounter for bonefish (sight-casting and muddying fish). I would also encourage you to take some wire leader material and some larger 4-6″ long needle-fish pattern plies. I have a feeling you\’ll also get chances to cast to barracuda and blue runners (species of jacks). Have a great trip….God bless you, Italo
