Category: brown trout

HI Italo, there was this pond that was dammed for years and was stocked with brown trout. However, the dam was removed this year. What do you think, where did the trout go? Upstream or downstream? Now, the whole place is basically a creek, the trout could have moved upstrem or downstream it.

Hi Dako, they can easily swim in both directions looking for ideal pools and runs to feed in. Looks like you’ll need to do some scouting and cover water to locate them…God bless you.

Hi Italo, I guess it doesn’t matter much, but what color of single hook do you prefer most for trout? Black, silver or gold? Thank you!

Approximately which lb test of monofilament is appropriate for a #4 octopus hook? I am trying to pair my line size to my hook size. Thank you Italo.

Posted on July 21st, 2020

Hi Angler, it’s good to use the right size leader depending on the size of the hook you are using.  A 10-20″ fluorocarbon leader is a good idea since it’s more abrasion resistant when going over rocks, wood, etc. and it’s also less visible than monofilament line. As we both know trout have very good eyesight, especially in clear water. If the trout you are going after are smaller I would go with the lightest leader possible (4-6lb.test)…God bless you.

What rod length would you suggest for trout fishing? I fish a creek pool so i dont have to cast that far. I watch the tip and still fish. Thank you!

Posted on July 23rd, 2020

Hi Angler, if the trout are less the. a couple pounds a 6’ rod with a light action should be fine. Fish with a Passion, God bless you, Italo.

Will a large brown trout usually avoid striking a very small spinner? I usually use #1 and do get trout but they are quite small. I was thinking of trying larger spinners but am thinking then I will get nothing lol Thank you!

Posted on October 13th, 2017

Hi Angler, I don’t think any size trout will “avoid” striking a well presented, small spinner.Trout of any size, small or large can strike a small lure. It’s not the size of the lure, it’s fishing it in an area where there are larger trout. If the trout are “in-land” (not Great Lakes migratory), the size of the spinner should be similar to the size of the food they are feeding on. A 6-12″ trout would feed on smaller food so a #1 spinner works well for them. A 12-24″ trout would feed on larger food so a #2 or #3 spinner would work well. At any time tough, any size could strike a smaller spinner or lure.

How big do inland rainbows get approximately? Do inland rainbows generally get bigger than inland browns? Thank you!

Posted on October 5th, 2017

Hi Angler, most rainbows and brown trout stocked in small lakes will grow to about 5-6 lb..  Some can reach weights of 10 lb. Their grown rate will depend on how plentiful their food supply is and whether or not they have been “engineered”. In western Canada natural strains of in-land rainbows as those in Quenell Lake, Kootenay Lake, Lake Pend Orielle, Naknek Lake and Lake Illiamna, BC can reach weights of over 20 lb. Both Rainbow and Brown trout have been genetically altered to grow over 30 lb. in size.

Hi Italo, what are your favorite blue fox vibrax spinner colors for brown trout? I know that generally silver works in clear water and sunny conditions and gold and copper in less light but anyways I was just wondering about your specific favorites of vibrax for browns. I have not tried firetiger yet but do know that browns like that red/yellow sometimes, anyways, Thank you!

Posted on September 24th, 2017

Hi Angler, I use all the colors you list in the same light conditions. My favorite color to use at low light (before the sun comes up and after it goes down & at night), and in murky water is a black blade and black bell. I find that the black makes the best silhouette that browns and steelhead hit even is pretty muddy water.
