Hi Stanley, we are well thank you and resting from our week of steelheading. Both the J11 & J13 work well both both spring browns in water shallower then 40′. The Rapala Scatter Rap Rapala series also works well. I have usually rigged one or more rods with a body bait and others with 1/4 or 1/2 oz casting spoons like the Lil Cleo in silver or gold with red/pink or green accent stripes…God bless you.

Italo; Randy Fasan here ; retired first responder from Windsor.( yes northern Italian) I have recently taken up fly fishing and fishing for Rainbows steelhead and Browns. I look great but can’t catch a fish for my life. Just watched your June video on tributaries and wanted to know the location if you are allowed to divulge it. I fish the saugeen, Maitland, mainly . I would love to meet you someday and spend a day fishing but I bet you get a lot of that. If ever in Amherstburg look me up! 519-817-6773 Hope to hear from you soon. Hi Randy, nice to hear from you and thanks for your efforts as a first responder.  I’m “Friulano” too!! Thank you for your invite and contact info. I have been coming to the Windsor area for the last 20 yrs to participate and promote the ICHA Handicapable Kids Fishing Derby but unfortunately due to Covid the event has been cancelled for the last 2-yrs. Hopefully it and I will be back to Windsor, ON.

Glad to hear you have taken up fly fishing. The show you saw was filmed pre-Covid in Upper NY state on one of the many tributaries that flow into Lake Ontario between Olcott and Rochester, NY. They have an excellent stocking program for Brown Trout, Steelhead and Salmon and up to Covid many anglers from Ontario were able to experience the excellent fishing there. Unfortunately I have not been able to get back (drive across the border) since shooting that TV show.

The Lake Huron/Georgian Bay tributaries can be tough fly fishing for the above species. The main reason is that the tributaries are on the larger size and there are few obstruction to keep the fish concentrated in any area. I would really encourage you to consider spending a weekend either in the GTA or east of the GTA and tributaries like: Bronte Creek, Credit River, Oshawa Creek, Bowmanville Creek & Wilmot Creek. All these have extended or all-year open fishing seasons, they are smaller so it’s easier to connect with fish and they have descent runs of all three species.  Hope you enjoy catching fish on the fly…God bless you.

HI Italo, there was this pond that was dammed for years and was stocked with brown trout. However, the dam was removed this year. What do you think, where did the trout go? Upstream or downstream? Now, the whole place is basically a creek, the trout could have moved upstrem or downstream it.

Hi Dako, they can easily swim in both directions looking for ideal pools and runs to feed in. Looks like you’ll need to do some scouting and cover water to locate them…God bless you.

Hi Italo, I guess it doesn’t matter much, but what color of single hook do you prefer most for trout? Black, silver or gold? Thank you!

Posted on July 30th, 2020

Hi Angler, I try and use a red hook…God bless you.

Approximately which lb test of monofilament is appropriate for a #4 octopus hook? I am trying to pair my line size to my hook size. Thank you Italo.

Posted on July 21st, 2020

Hi Angler, it’s good to use the right size leader depending on the size of the hook you are using.  A 10-20″ fluorocarbon leader is a good idea since it’s more abrasion resistant when going over rocks, wood, etc. and it’s also less visible than monofilament line. As we both know trout have very good eyesight, especially in clear water. If the trout you are going after are smaller I would go with the lightest leader possible (4-6lb.test)…God bless you.

What rod length would you suggest for trout fishing? I fish a creek pool so i dont have to cast that far. I watch the tip and still fish. Thank you!

Posted on July 23rd, 2020

Hi Angler, if the trout are less the. a couple pounds a 6’ rod with a light action should be fine. Fish with a Passion, God bless you, Italo.
