Atlantic Salmon are the minority out of the Chinooks and Cohos that run up our Lake Ontario tributaries. The strain of Atlantics stocked are a “landlocked” stock, not sea-run stock that run up Atlantic coastal rivers/tributaries starting in June of each year. They will start running in late summer (if the tribs are cold enough and there is enough water), or early fall along with the Pacific Salmon. Most Atlantic Salmon hook-ups are “accidental” while targeting the other salmon species and steelhead.

Hi James, It was nice getting to know you, sharing a coffee and talking fishing amongst other things. I have only fished out of Shelborne, NS to produce saltwater TV shows, but not in the Tamagouche region to the north.

I have not fished the Waughs River but I know there has been a great effort put in to assist primarily Atlantic Salmon and trout to negotiate the falls by way of a fish ladder to be able to access prime spawning grounds up-stream. Not sure how much the fish are using the ladder. It does have a population of Atlantic salmon, brown & brook trout. Efforts have also been made to stock the Atlantics, but not sure of it’s success. For the browns and brook trout, timing is very important, to fish the river when they are in specific stretches and having the right water clarity. Check the local regulations for seasons and angling techniques. If you are allowed to fish small artificial lures, the Vibrax #1 & #2 & the Coutdown Raala in the CD3 & CD4 size will work well for the trout. For the salmon some of the more popular local flies will work well like the Micky Finn…God bless you.

Hi Benjie, Glad to hear you are going to be fishing the Miramichi for Atlantics. I did a show out of Doketown, NB many years back for “drop-back” Atlantics. The water was high, we used large wet flies and sinking lines and caught a lot of fish. I have not fished char in either Norway or Greenland so unfortunately I cannot give you any info….God bless you, Italo

Hi Matt…Sounds like a nice lake. Chances of walleye survival sound excellent. I don\’t know if there is any spawning habitat that would enable the walleye to spawn successfully. If the owner wants to get good advice before stocking any other species, I would encourage him to contact the President of the Ontario Aquaculture Association (for sportfishing), Karl Dickob to get his expertice. He can be reached at, kinmountfishfarm@sympatico.ca …God bless you, Italo

Hi Peter…Thank you for your kind words. I receive them. To answer your pond question. It sounds like you have an ideal pond for stocking. Rainbow & brook trout will most likely not reproduce naturally unless you have an in-flow and adequate spawning sites (small, clean gravel areas along the shore, or where there is some current). If they don’t reproduce, they can grow quite large (upwards of 6 lb.), but you will need to re-stock every once and a while to maintain the trout population. The pond sounds like it’s deep enough. If you did want to keep trout, you may just need to impliment an aerating system in the summer time when water temperatures rise and oxygen levels can drop. Largemouth bass on the other hand should do fine and also reproduce (since they don’t have the same spawning site requirements as trout do). If you do stock bass, they will predate on any smaller fish in your pond and that includes catfish (they don’t mind getting pricked while eating them). The catfish are also important because they are scavengers and keep your pond clean. I would really encourage you to contact my good friend Karl Dickob who is the President of the Ontario Fisheries Enhancement and Aquaculture Association. He can give you the best advice regarding your pond. You can reach him at, www.ontarioaquaculture.net . God bless you and your family this Christmas also, Italo
