Hi Italo. I am a volunteer at the North Hastings Community Fish Hatchery, located in Bancroft, Ontario.Every year we stock well over 10,000 trout into local lakes. We have the only hatchery in Ontario that re-circulates our water, which results in warmer water, and fish that are 4-5 times bigger than fish that are grown in traditional flow through hatcheries. As a not-for-profit organization we hold an annual pig and lamb roast to raise the funds we need to operate.Have you ever considered mentioning community hatcheries in one of your shows?

Hi Ian, sounds like you do a great job raising fish and stocking them in your area. I have worked with fishing clubs like the St. Catharine’s Fish & Game who work with the OMNR&F in stocking trout in Lake Ontario and I have also worked quite closely with the Ontario Fisheries Enhancement and Aquaculture Association on helping to promote aquaculture specifically for sportfishing.

Hi Italo there is this pond that has been stocked with browns and rainbows a few times. This place used to be a gravel pit once but is now a nice clear water pond. Anyways what do you think are these fish spawning there I dont think that there is any creek running into it though.

Hi Angler…Tough to answer your question since I don’t know if all the fish stocked were the same sex, or if they were even fertile. Sometimes fish raised in aquaculture are purposely modified so they can’t reproduce in the wild, they just grow until they are caught, or die naturally. If they are fertile and of opposite sexes, but there are no ideal spawning sites it’s unlikely that there is natural reproduction by either species….God bless you, Italo.

Hi Italo with the up coming election I heard that the Liberals want to cut the fish stocking in Lake Ontario. Is this true or do you know any facts on this

Hi Brian…I’m not much into politics and I have not heard anything about stocking plans for Lake Ontario in the future from the Ontario Government. I know NY state does a great job stocking trout and salmon and that they will continue to do so. For the most part, we benefit greatly. I live in the Niagara region and many of the trout & salmon that we catch in Lake Ontario/Niagara River are NY stocked fish….God bless you, Italo

I watch your show on WFN and believe it or not we have met. You said that there is a big need for people needed in the fisheries and help stocking lakes and rivers Any info would be great and would love to be involved and possibly make a living from it. Im a competative angler and wonder if you remember me with all my tackle all over the picnic table at Merrit Island in Welland Ont.
