34th “Sucker Sunday” Fish Derby scheduled for April 11, 2010 at Cootes Paradise, ON.
Posted on March 16th, 2010Well it’s O Fish OL.., the 34th Sucker Sunday running of this prestigious event will be held on Sunday April 11th 2010 off Cootes Drive with the headquarters to be held on the west side of the bridge which over passes Spencer Creek. Organizer and 3 time Sucker Champ Marty Zuliniak says, “This year will be very interesting to all concerned including the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Ministry of Environment and the RBG to see how many Suckers will be caught. Last year the Derby produced zero Suckers. There were about 2,500 Suckers pass through the fish gates at the DeJardines Canal and these fish had bypassed the juicy worms on account that they didn’t trust the spawning grounds that they have been using for generations. This year should tell the story if the recovery plan is working.†The Derby will run from 8am to 4pm and tickets can be purchased at Uptown Eccles on April 1st until April 9th. There will be 100 tickets set aside for kids who will always fish for free and 50 tickets to the first Seniors, Adults and Students for the small fee of $10.00 with a mother-lode of prizes to be won by all who attend. Once again we will be asking local merchants from the community and the city of Hamilton to donate a prize as this derby would not exists without their generosity. Sucker Sunday is the longest running sucker derby in North America and the Sucker Showdown in Tammeycomo, Missouri is the second longest suckerfish derby which will be 30 years old this year.
