WARNING to ICE ANGLERS, southern Ontario.

Posted on February 24th, 2017

We are all enjoying amazing mild temperatures in southern Ontario which is great for outdoor activities, but, I just spoke to a good friend on Lake Simcoe who checked conditions for me and while there is safe ice as of this am, conditions are quickly deteriorating.  Inshore waters are safe and will probably be safe this weekend, but off-shore waters where many anglers are running out a distance to find whitefish and Lakers in deeper water are changing as we speak. The ice is 8″ thick out further and starting to look “purple” in many areas. This is a sign that the ice is starting to “honeycomb”.

This is the last stage before ice dissolves back in to liquid. Use your common sense. Many Lake Simcoe hut operators are in the process of taking their huts off. No matter where you are planning to ice fish in southern Ontario this weekend, make sure it’s safe and stable before heading out. Fish are not worth drowning for.
