When we fish the shallow grass-flats in southwest Florida targeting Snook, Redfish, & Spotted Sea Trout, we often get a surprise fish on that fights like stink on light-tackle.
That’s non other than the Jack Cravelle. Even a small jack fights hard, but when you hook one over 5 lb. on light gear, it can turn into quite a fight. We normally don’t use live bait, we just cast artificials and one of my favorite for all the flats species including Jacks is the Lunker City line of plastic swim-baits in the 4″ length and 1/4 oz jigheads. The above Jack slammed a Lunker City Lunker Tube. When the tide is low we just cover as much water on the grass flats and look for light-colored areas which is a sand-hole that is usually 1-2′ deeper than the surrounding water. Those are excellent areas to hook any of the above fish!
