Saugeen River, ON fishing update.
Friday, June 29th, 2012

Wayne Sheridan reports: River levels are a bit low right now on most of the rivers in southern Ontario and this has made fishing a challenge for many. The fish are easily spooked so look for the fish near undercut banks, debris, shaded areas and in deep holes. Best fishing times will be early morning and at dusk. We wish everyone has a fun and safe Canada Day weekend.

River Flow Rates: moderate/low. Visibility clear 15ft.

River Levels: Saugeen River (above Durham) dropping at 1.173M, Saugeen River (Walkerton) at 9.304M, Saugeen at Port Elgin down at 7.466M, Sauble River (Sauble Falls) dropping at 0.768M, Sydenham River (Owen Sound) down at 4.885M, Maitland River (above Wingham) down at 9.896M, French River at Woseley Bay at 186.396M, Bronte Creek near Zimmerman up 5.795M, Credit River at Streetsville down at 4.439M, Credit River at Orangeville down at 11.192M, Grand River (Doon), down at 4.084M (below Shand dam) up at 1.627M, Rideau River at Ottawa up at 2.63M, Ottawa River at Britannia down at 57.769M

Prime Fishing Times: Saturday June 30th, 2012: 10:08 pm to 11:10 pm (moon overhead) and 9:30 am to 10:38am (moon underneath). Moonrise 5:28 pm. Moonset 2:54 am.

Flyfishing: Sulfur dun, green drake, iso, caddis, red blood worm, crayfish and minnow.

Great Lakes Fishing: Trout and salmon are presently in the 100ft depth and below. Best bet is Lyman lures, monkey puke and herring colours. Use smaller lures that will imitate the smaller baitfish. Use Lucky Strike lures.

Always Fish Safely

Walleye pre-fish, Welland River, ON.
Sunday, June 24th, 2012

This afternoon Barb, our pup Mulligan & I took the 16′ River Hawk boat and decided to spend a couple of hours pre-fishing a new section of the Welland River, ON to try and locate some walleye spots.  We headed out around noon (which is not the best time to go walleye fishing on a warm, sunny day), knowing that if we did locate walleye, they could not resist our offerings of Rapala & Storm crankbaits.

My wife Barbara fished the Storm Thundercrank crankbait while I experimented with the Rapala Dives To 7 Flat, the Storm Wiggle Wart Mad Flash,  and the Dives To Thug.  Good news….all three crankbaits produced for us.  We fished the Walleye Tournament spinning rod/Rapala Seeker spinning reel & the Rapala R-Type rod and reel loaded with Sufix 832, 10 lb. test braid lines.  We also used our Minn Kota Terrova elelctric to work all our spots and the Humminbird 500 series sonar to locate the structure and fish!

The first spot we chose to fish was a 4-5′, rock-covered flat that went right across the river.  Barb started hooking rockbass right off away.  No walleye were on that spot, so we headed down-river and fished a spot I had marked while fishing with Tony Bracknock, our GM on our hwww. ufindfish.com  , app.   The spot is a wide, shallow, rock and weed “saddle” that again goes right across the river rising to 4′ of water and surrounded by 10′ depths.  Barbara immediately hooked up to a nice 24″ walleye using the Storm Thundercrank.  I hooked the next fish casting in the same area on the Rapala Dives To Thug.  The walleye was around 5 lb., and after a scrappy fight, got off right at the boat.

From there we headed down-river to a major structure break that goes across the river and forms the base of a seldom used railway bridge.  We fished the current-side with no success, but when we moved to the down-current side, I hooked two walleye around the 21″ length, both on the Rapala Dives To 7 Flat.

Looks like those will be the first two spots I will be fishing tomorrow when we shoot day-1 of a dynamic, low-vis, river-structure fishing show for walleye using the above Storm/Rapala crankbaits.

Crankin’ Walleye from the Welland River, ON.
Wednesday, June 20th, 2012

After filming in northern Ontario for the last couple of weeks I was really curious if the walleye had moved onto structure areas on the Welland River, ON.  I went out for a couple of hours this afternoon with my pup Mulligan and cast the Rapala DT7F crankbait to structure breaks in 10-12′ of water.  My first fish turned out to be a Crappie, than in a matter of minute,  I was pleasantly surprised when I hooked my first walleye,  it measured out around 25″.

I used the Rapala Concept Ti rod with the Rapala Shift spinning reel and Sufix 10 lb. test 832 braid.  The outfit is fantastic for casting crankbaits.  I had a tough time taking photos on my own, but I think you will get the gist of my outing.

I hope to do a TV show on crankin’ walleye over shallow structure and in turbid waters next week.

Terrace, Kitimat, BC fishing update.
Tuesday, June 19th, 2012

Noel Gyger reports. Weather is GREAT let’s go fishing! Good runs of Steelhead are noted…plus good local Trout and Dolly Varden Char fishing. Early run of Chinook Salmon has started, mostly bound for the Kalum River. The earliest we ever caught one was April 5th. We have lots of rain right now which has caused some rivers to blow out.

Skeena River: Water is high and dirty. Apparently the Bulkley River and other tribs are colored up. The spring run Steelhead are in the river now. Plus Trout and Dolly Varden Char. Early Chinook (King) Salmon are coming in now. Catching Steelhead and Chinook on the same day is possible. Just need some clean water to get at them. Reg: all wild Steelhead everywhere in British Columbia are catch and release.

Kalum River: Both lower and upper sections are in good shape. The water is coming up slowly. These are the conditions we like. A good run of Steelhead are in the river now. Many of them have spawned and are now kelts heading back to the ocean. These fish should be handled with extra care. BIG fresh Chinook are coming in. The river record is 86-pounds.

Lakelse River: The water is in good shape and fishing for Trout is fair.  Chinook are being caught off the Lakelse Bridge.  Tip: Jigs work best.

Zymoetz (Copper) River: Water is too dirty to fish. Facts: Last year we had a record run of Steelhead, lets hope at least we have another good run this year. The fly rods work extremely well in this river.

Kitimat River: Chinook fishing is good.  Some lucky anglers are still catching fresh Steelhead.

Smithers area Lakes: Finally, here is our fishing report for June 1!!!!! Yes, fishing is happening….. At Rainbow Alley fishing is decent with minnow pattern. Nice fish are being caught! For you avid trout fishers: The Stellako opens June 1! Most lakes are fishing well! Lake trout are being caught near the surface. Try a T50 or a T60 flatfish… Burbot fishing is also good at this time! Remember to use a 3 centimetre gap hook for burbot. For rainbow trout try triple teasers, small spinners, wedding bands and apexes. Chronomid fishing is also an option in lakes!

Prince Rupert: Fishing for Salmon, especially Chinook is very good, if you know the hot spots.  Hopefully a large run is heading for the Skeena River.  Bottom fishing is very good also, especially Halibut.  Dungeness Crabbing is outstanding.  Contact me if you are interested to book a charter.

If you would like to book a guided fishing trip with Noel, you can contact him at, www.noelgyger.ca .

Trophy Smallmouth from Lake St. Clair, Michigan, USA
Tuesday, June 19th, 2012

Our good friend Pat Pagano from La Salle, ON reports that the trophy smallmouth bass fishing is getting better and better on the Michigan, USA side of Lake St. Clair.  They fished jigs/tubes to catch these beauties in 7-12′ of water.

Walleye & Pike last evening fish at Marmac Lodge, Esnagi Lake, ON.
Monday, June 18th, 2012

On our last night we went out for a couple of hours to cast some Storm Jointed Thundersticks, Lucky Strike Spoons and Spinnerbaits and caught walleye & pike.  We fished the Rapala Shift, TS2 and R-Type rods equipped with Rapala Shift, Andros and Avantis spinning reels loaded with Sufix 832, 10 lb. test braid and fished shallow water shorelines just before dark.  Both pike adn walleye were feeding in less than 4′ of water which made for some fun fishing.

If you would like to book a wilderness fishing trip to Marmac Lodge, you can contact them at, www.northtoadventure.com .
