Gulf of Mexico, Fl mixed bag of bottom fish.
Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

Today we took a couple of hours and headed out on the Gulf of Mexico.  Using our UFindFish app. we traveled out about 3-miles and fished in about 30′ of water.  As soon as we found some structure I marked it on our app. so that we could keep drifting over it.  It proved to be an excellent spot where we caught everything from Grunts, Porgy’s, Flounder, Blue Runners, Jacks, and many more species of fish.  We kept a few for a fresh-fish dinner….again and they were excellent!!  We fished 1/2 oz. egg sinkers in a “sliding-sinker” rig using #4 saltwater hooks and pieces of frozen squid.  All of the fish were caught on the bottom as soon as we came close to the structure.

Fishing for Whiting, Englewood Beach, FL.
Monday, February 27th, 2012

I took an hour to catch some whiting off the beach today using my Rapala Shift series rod and reel and Sufix 832 10 lb. test line.  Whiting are plentiful all winter long along the Gulf coast beaches, they are easy to catch on bait and taste great.  I decided to use a sliding sinker rig with a small hook and pieces of shrimp.  I was not disappointed and caught quite a few fish in just an hour.  They were cleaned right away and we enjoyed a fresh fish fry with a Louisiana Coating we picked-up at the grocery store.

Saugeen River, ON an area fishing update.
Friday, February 24th, 2012

Wayne Sheridan reports: Cooler weather Sunday night will help stabilize ice conditions on lakes for fishing on Family Day in southern Ontario. A couple of weeks ago, Mario and some friends went fishing in Kincardine and caught and released some nice rainbows. Some friends also went to Lake Simcoe this week and caught lots of nice perch (picture). Most were in the 8 to 12 inch range and lots of double hitters. At the present time there is about 1 ft of ice in the shallow bays but it is open in deeper waters. A warming trend mid week will destabilize the ice.

River Flow Rates: medium. Visibility tea coloured, visibility 8ft.

River Levels: Saugeen River (above Durham) rising at 1.31M, Saugeen River (Walkerton)  at 9.7M, Saugeen at Port Elgin down at 8.00M, Sauble River (Sauble Falls) dropping at 1.118M, Sydenham River (Owen Sound) rising at 5.086M, Maitland River (above Wingham) dropping at 10.13M, French River at Woseley Bay at 187.135M, Bronte Creek near Zimmerman down 5.983M, Credit River at Streetsville down at 4.561M, Credit River at Orangeville rising at 11.226M, Grand River (Doon), dropping at 4.111M (below Shand dam) down at 1.56M, Rideau River at Ottawa not available, Ottawa River at Britannia at 58.374M

Prime Fishing Times: Saturday February 25th, 2012: 1:39 pm to 4:31 pm (moon overhead) and 1:25 am to 4:06 am (moon underneath). Moon rise 8:23 am, moon set 9:53 pm

Flyfishing: crayfish, bloodworms, worms and minnows for larger trout. Use roe for rainbow and steelhead, single eggs seem to get the best results. Minnows for perch.

Great Lakes Fishing: We are waiting for the lakes to freeze to safely venture out. Best lures are purple/black Lyman’s with silver specks and Lucky Strike spoons. Also, Rudy Hachey won the Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular using his trusted white ladder-back Lyman lure with a 21.16-lb (9.53 kilogram) Chinook salmon. Nice fish!

Be careful walking on the ice near the edge of the river. Reg: all wild Steelhead everywhere in British Columbia are catch and release.  Sockeye fishing is great. News: The Sockeye run on the Skeena is predicted to be low this year but chart below shows an above average run has come-in so far. Saltwater mixed-fish catch from southwest Florida, USA.
Thursday, February 23rd, 2012

We headed out again today around noon and explored one of the small creeks that flows into the inter-coastal in Englewood, Fl.  We arrived at our spot and caught several nice saltwater catfish that took a live shrimp fished under a float.  We kept 3-cats since they are delicious eating!  Next we fished the main channel for a variety of inter-coastal fish using live shrimp.  We finished the day casting jigs/plastic grubs again over the large expanse of grass-flats for spotted trout and caught some really nice fish.  Tomorrow we will be taking a break, but probably out again on Saturday.

Spotted Sea Trout action off Manasota Key, Florida.
Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

My wife Barbara, Mulligan our pup and I finally had a chance to take our 18′ Wellcraft out to fish the flats off of Manasota Key, Florida.  We fished a 1km stretch of flats where the water varied from 2-4′ and cast 1/8 & 1/4 oz. jigs rigged with 4 1/2″ plastic minnow grubs as we drifted with the wind.  We had a flood-tide this afternoon which meant we could sneak up on the shallow grass flats with ease.  I used the Rapala Shift series rod and reel and my wife Barbara used the Rapala R-Type series rod and reel.  This was a good chance to check-out their performance in saltwater.  Both outfits were loaded with Sufix 10 lb. test 832 braid and equipped with 20 lb. test Sufix fluorocarbon leaders.

If you would like to see exactly where we caught our fish just load our UFindFish app. on your iPhone or Android phone and go to south-west Florida (about 1 hr. south of St. Petersburg ).  You will see Manasota Key right on the Gulf and the spot marked with a description not too far to the south-west.  Isn’t technology amazing!!  We will be going out tomorrow to see if we can find a school of larger fish.

Fish License-free this Family Fishing Weekend

It has been a mild winter, but the fishing is still hot!

A mild winter calls for extra caution when enjoying Ontario’s License-free Family Fishing Weekend, says the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH).

Where ice conditions are safe, Ontario Family Fishing Events (OFFE) will be taking place province-wide from February 18 through Monday, February 20, which is the provincial Family Day. Outdoors clubs, service groups, conservation authorities and others are organizing fishing derbies designed just for children and their families. Many events are free or have minimal entrance fees.

“Ontario Family Fishing Events introduce fishing to people of all ages by offering Canadian residents the opportunity to fish Ontario waters license-free,” said Alesha Caldwell Conservation Outreach Programs Coordinator for the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters. “We have been running a media blitz on the Weather Network and other television and radio stations and the excitement is growing daily.”

Ontarians spend well over a million days fishing through the ice every year, which generates economic benefits to many communities across the province. Winter or summer, fishing gives new anglers the chance to develop a strong connection with their natural surroundings and learn the importance of conservation.

The Ontario Family Fishing Events initiative is an OFAH and Ministry of Natural Resources partnership, supported by the Canadian Sportfishing Industry Association and other supporters. For more details and a complete list of events, visit  www.ontariofamilyfishing.com.

Pike’s Landing Restaurant, Morven, Georgia get’s my vote for best fresh-fish restaurant in America!!
Monday, February 13th, 2012

My wife Barbara, our pup Mulligan & I decided to drive to Florida a few days ago.  On the way down we stopped near Valdosta, Georgia and discovered an excellent fresh-fish restaurant called Pike’s Landing.  In addition to enjoying fresh caught fish, we met some of the friendliest people on earth…in Morven, Georgia.  What makes this restaurant different and better than any fish restaurant I have ever dined at is that Dan McLeod,  who owns and operates the restaurant along with his wife Jackie catches all the fish that is served in the restaurant and he also cooks the fish!  This is no average fish-restaurant.  Dan catches mullet, catfish, redhorse sucker, jacks and many more fish, mostly at night, he cleans them, sells them fresh and also serves them in the restaurant.  Dan also makes his own fishing boats and the nest that he uses…talk about a talented and energetic man!

The fish are served southern-style, deep-fried in a special coating that Dan mixes along with grits, hush-puppies, fries and coleslaw.  My wife and I enjoyed the fried calamari, grilled shrimp and their #1 fish, and my favorite, deep-fried mullet.  Our meal was excellent.

Besides meeting and spending time with Jackie and Dan, we also met and got to know their oldest daughter Emma, and the entire serving team of, from left to right, Sarah Miller, Jordan McNabb, Bonnie Rivers, Tiffany Prevott, and Emma.

If you are traveling through Georgia on your way to Florida it’s well worth the detour to stop in and have a dinner at Pike’s Landing.  If you do, you will meet some of eh friendliest people in the US and enjoy an unforgettable fresh fish dinner.
