This year marks the 5th year of The Peter Larmand Outdoors Kids Charity Tournament for CHEO – April 30th, 2011
Friday, January 28th, 2011

Hey Folks,

I hope everyone had a great holiday and that you are all coping with this cold weather we have been getting lately.  Although do not to worry spring is just around the corner, at least keep telling yourself that and it might arrive sooner. :) February is just around the corner, fishing and boats shows are just about ready to start.  Before you know it we are fishing in shorts and t-shirts again.

However, before we get to the shorts and t-shirts there is an annual event that has been taking place the past 4 years, the Peter Larmand Outdoors Kids Charity Tournament for CHEO.  Last year was our biggest year ever.  We had 41 kids that participated and we raised over $700 for the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario.  This year marks the 5th year and we are hoping to make it bigger and better than previous years.

Last year we started at the end of March putting this all together and the turnout was more than we expected.  So this year we thought that we would start earlier and get the word out to more areas to try and make it even bigger.

The event this year will be held on April 30th, 2011 with the same format starting at 10:00 am ending at 2:00 pm with a lunch break at noon with prizes immediately following the event.  The fees will remain the same at $10 per child or $25 per family of 3 or more kids.  This year we will schedule it a week earlier so that it doesn’t conflict with the opening of walleye on the first weekend in May.

If there is any way that you can help out with this event, it would be much appreciated.  Whether it’s with a prize donation or your time during the event, seeing the look on their faces when they catch those fish is amazing.  The bigger smiles come when they come up once we call their name for their prizes.  Makes all of the effort worthwhile, check out the gallery to see what happened last year at http://www.peterlarmand.com/outdoors/gallery/childrens-charity-event

So if you can spare a few hours on a Saturday and bring your kids or know people that have kids and want to introduce them to the outdoors and the sport of fishing that we all love and enjoy doing, bring them along.
Please reply to this e-mail if you plan on attending so that we can make sure that we have enough prizes for all participants.

Regards,

Pete Larmand

I had the pleasure of attending the Year of India in Canada 2011 Press Conference held in North York, Toronto this past Monday along with our President Salim Sachedina and one of your India-partners, Munir Talib.  The The Press Conference was hosted by Mrs. Preeti Sara, Consul General of India & Ronjon Lahiri, Director, India Tourism, Toronto.  Their special guest was Professor Norman Archer, Professor Emeritus, DeGroote School of Management, McMaster University.  Mrs. Sara unveiled the Market Survey Report conducted through the WIN A TRIP TO INDIA CAMPAIGN conducted by India Tourism office all over Canada and spoke about the YEAR OF INDIA IN CANADA IN 2011.   Prof Norman Archer spoke about the Market Survey Report.  Mr. Ronjon Lahiri also asked me to announce our  sportfishing filming trip scheduled in northern India from March 26-April 12.  A question & answer followed by general interaction  with the Media and Press and also a delicious Indian-cuisine lunch.

Canadian Sportfishing is excited about the opportunity of featuring the culture, food, geography, special points of interest and especially the fantastic fishing India has to offer sport fishermen.  On our trip we will be angling for rainbow & brown trout in the tributaries of the Tirthan and the Beas Rivers, as well as catching trophy Masheer, a highly esteemed India sportfish and also trophy carp and catfish.  You won’t want to miss any of the episodes.

For those of you that would like to get more information or possibly even join us when we film in northern India, you can see a detailed itinerary of our trip and a video where I explain the areas we will be visiting and the fish we will be angling for at, http://www.milleniumtravel.ca/sportfishing.php .

Ken Truffen’s – Florida, fishing report from Disney World!
Monday, January 24th, 2011

kenbass3I vacationed in Florida, at Disney World with the family January 15-22, 2011 and managed to squeeze in some great fishing during the week.
I stayed on-property at a Disney World Resort Villa that was surrounded by several small lakes. I normally fished for an hour or two in the late afternoon and from 9:00PM to 11:00PM each night. Aside from some protective otters and a legendary alligator (which thankfully I never encountered), the fishing conditions were good. The temperature of the lake, just steps outside my hotel room, was about 60 degrees Fahrenheit and the temperature outside was in the 70’s during the day. During the evenings, the temperature would drop to the 50′s.

On the first day of fishing I got a few bites on my Rapala Clack-n-rap and my KIKO Fishing REEL KEEL but found the most effective method to trigger bites was to simply texas-rig a Gary Yamamoto Watermelon 5” Senko, cast it out, let in sink to the bottom, and retrieve very slowly with a pause every 10 seconds or so. During the week, in the lakes throughout the resort, I caught about a dozen bass ranging from 1 ½ to 3 ½ pounds. On January 18th, I took my 5 year old son and 11 year old daughter on a Disney Fishing Excursion with FLW Pro Eddie Scaturro and had a blast. In two hours, we caught about a dozen bass with the biggest being about 3 pounds. Eddie told us we’d catch a lot more BASS if we had come a month later when the spawn is in full swing.

Now it’s time to switch back to my ice fishing gear. I’m heading to Belwood Lake, near Fergus, Ontario this weekend in search of some monster Pike.

Terrace, BC Fishing Update.
Sunday, January 23rd, 2011

Noel Gyger reports.  The weather has warmed up and we are back to near normal day tim temperatures of around zero degrees C…just right for winter Steelheading. We’ve had lots of snow so walking the trails to your favourite pool is going to be a little tougher now. The Skeena River is in good shape but full of ice flows and frozen over in spots. Be very careful walking on the ice ledges! There may be some Steelhead wintering overin some locations. The Trout and Dolly Varden Char are available year round. The Kalum River is low and in good shape and fishing for Steelhead is good.  The Zymoetz (Copper) River is in poor shape with lots of ice flows and ice ledges. If you can find open water the Steelhead fishing should be pretty good. The upper section closed for fishing on January 1st. The Lakelse River is in good shape and fishing for Steelhead and Trout should be Ok now since the weather warmed up. Lake ice fishing has startedand the fishing is good. Beware of thin ice! See a report from Ross Lake below.Kitimat River: We received an unbelievable amount of snow last weekend and many anglers in Kitimat were busy shoveling their driveways. It seemed that we were shoveling around the clock. With all the snow that we received caused access to the Kitimat River to be limited. When the snow finally stopped it was followed by rain which made shoveling even worse. Snow + Rain = Slush. Slush is the worst conditions in my opinion. It makes driving dangerous, walking in it ugly and fishing in it is a pain. Consequently, due to the weather the only thing to report on the Kitimat River was there was nothing going on. Douglas Channel; The Resident Salt Water Anglers were in the same boat as the Freshwater Anglers. They were busy shoveling their driveways and coping with the snow and then the slush. The additional issue of a huge snow fall followed by rain is that the rain saturates the snow and the snow load on boats has to been addressed for obvious reasons. There was no fishing activity on the water this week due to the weather. This is one of the few times when there was no fishing goinon in either the Kitimat River or the Douglas Channel. Such is life in the North West. Prince Rupert has fantastic Winter Chinook fishing, weather depending.

Ryan Edenborough’s Winter Carp Fishing Report – Wow!
Thursday, January 20th, 2011
Thames River, ON - Winter Carp!

Thames River, ON - Winter Carp!

I Drove down to London on the weekend to visit one of my good fishing buddies, Jayson Belfry. After we both showed off some of our newest fishing pictures and shared some stories, he asked me if I wanted to do some winter Carp fishing. When I was done laughing at him, I reminded him of the minus 20 degree temperatures with the wind chill, but that did not seem to phase him one bit. So we rigged up a # 6 egg hook with a 1/4 oz. slip sinker, bought a can of corn nibblets and he drove me to a nice quiet pool on the Thames River. I was amazed that we both were getting hits in the first 5 minutes ! And only moments after that, I was hooked up and fighting my first ever January Carp !!!

Thanks Jay for creating an even bigger monster out of me ! I will be back !

Ryan Edenborough, fishing report from Lake Simcoe, ON
Monday, January 17th, 2011

The weather has been cold, but the Simcoe Perch action is still hot !  Last week

I was able to get out fishing with some of my good buddies, Flav, Jake, Andrew and Devon.   We fished the west side of Lake Simcoe in about 40 ft. of water, and for my 5th trip in a row this year, it was non stop action !  Some of my buddies were getting perch on Rapalas and jigging spoons, and I was catching them on plain old hook and sinker with small minnows.  Alot of the perch were in the 7 inch range, however it was not difficult to catch our fair share of the bigger ones for a late night snack.  Even though the weather has been cold, the ice is not much thicker than the week before due to the amount of snow preventing it to thicken.  We were fishing on 6 inches of ice, but there was still alot of un safe ice out there, so please be carefull.  Hope to see you on the water soon !

Terrace, BC Fishing Update.
Monday, January 17th, 2011

Noel Gyger reports.  Extreme cold weather made river fishing this week nearly impossible. The average day time temperature was only minus 8 degree Celsius with lots of wind and blowing snow. The Skeena River is in good shape but full of ice flows and frozen over in spots. Be very careful walking on the ice ledges! There may be some Steelhead wintering over in some locations. The Trout and Dolly Varden Char are available year round. The Kalum River is low and in good shape and fishing for Steelhead is poor now due to the cold weather. The Zymoetz (Copper) River is in poor shape with lots of ice flows and ice ledges. If you can find open water the Steelhead fishing should be pretty good when the weather warms up. The upper section closed for fishing on January 1st. The Lakelse River is in good shape and fishing for Steelhead and Trout should be Okonce the weather warms up. Lake ice fishing has started and the fishing is good. Beware of thin ice! See a full lake report below. Kitimat River: Early in the week when the temperatures were milder, a few anglers reported catching some Cutthroat Trout. Douglas Channel; Lori from MK Bay reports, “the temperature at sea level has been bitter cold and there have been Storm Warnings in effect for most of the week”. There are signs of Bait Fish in the Kitimat Harbor but no one wanted to risk the cold temperature and strong winds to find out if there were Winter Chinook in the Kitimat Harbour following the Bait Fish. The best way to stay out of trouble is to not put yourself into situations to get into it. The very cold temperatures can cause problems with hydraulics, steering, batteries and many other issues on the boats. Most boatersexercised the good judgment to wait for better conditions. The forecast is for warmer temperatures next week. Smart money says to wait.  Prince Rupert has fantastic Winter Chinook fishing, weather depending.
