BlindDear Italo, I wanted to say what a pleasure it was to hear you speak at the conservation Galah dinner just prior to the Toronto spring fishing Show.  Great message!

I enjoy immensely your very informative show and the excellent narration you provide – really, as someone without sight I don’t think I’m missing much of the informative portion of your show.  Good work too on creating a fully accessible website for people like me who use computers that talk.

I’m not sure if you were present to hear my closing presentation at the Galah dinner that night, or if you were present the next morning at the Canadian Fishing Hall of Fame Inductee Ceremony where I also gave the closing presentation?  Never-the-less, I’ve made it my personal mission to spread the news about the inherent accessibility of fishing as a sport that can be enjoyed by people with vision loss (over 1 million in Canada and 13 million in the US, with the number expected to rise as the population ages ).  As you can no doubt appreciate, most times fishing involves detecting the bite through touch and the actual fish is seen only after it’s caught.  So if fishing has a lot to do with touch and focus, who better than someone who depends on these skills?

As a semi-professional fisher with vision loss, (totally blind), I publish articles featuring specific fishing techniques for magazines such as Ontario Fishing Magazine and the PAA’s official publication, “Online Fishermen”.  These articles serve two primary purposes.  1, They allow me to document for the general readership the specific fishing techniques that rely on the sense of touch and 2, I create a second more detailed article with added narration for publication on www.blindfishingboat.com for the benefit of my non-sighted readership.  By the way, the Blind Fishing boat initiative is not engaged in selling, and runs more-or-less as a not-for-profit.

A 3rd. goal of my mission is to send a message to the rest of the fishing community that it’s “cool” to go fishing with someone with vision loss.  I’m always amazed just how many non-sighted fishers I meet from around the world who are willing, able and equipped to get out fishing, but lack the all-important fishing buddy.

I have created a small light-weight fishing boat that I can operate independently, but even still, I depend on my wife to maintain 2-way radio contact when coming back to the dock as I’m often launching from private campgrounds situated on small lakes which means I’m not the only one on the water.  My audible obstacle detection sonar works great, (like reverse sensors on automobiles), but I still try to minimize risk where ever possible.  While I have a second gas-powered fishing boat that I use for taking non-sighted guests fishing or to fish tournaments with buddies, I’m not advocating that blind people start zipping around in their own bass boats, which is why it’s important that sighted fishers be convinced it’s O.K. to fish with someone with vision loss – after all, it’s not like we are going to wonder off and get lost on the boat (LOL).

If there is any thing you could think of that would assist me in getting my message out, I’d be very pleased to hear your ideas.  Someone with as much experience as yourself has no doubt much to teach people who are relatively new to the media game.

Again, it was fantastic to hear you speak in person, and I appreciate greatly your message about fishing being an inclusive sport – thank you, thank you, thank you!

The best of luck with your up-coming season – in all respects.

My very best regards.

Sincerely,

Lawrence

Shore fishing at Serena Residences, Mazatlan, Mexico.
Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

On our last shooting day we planned to head back out along the north-west coast of Mexico to chase trophy Roosterfish.  We were ready at 6am and were cruising towards the El Cid harbor outlet when we saw the red-flag was up.  In Mazatlan, Mexico that means that the harbor-master has deemed it un-safe to leave the harbor due to strong winds and big waves, so we turned around, headed back to the dock and decided to go shore fishing for a few hours.  As we put-putted back, we had our lines out and I hooked my first Curvina (Corbina in English).  A beautiul 7-8 lb., silver fish that looks much like a Redfish.  It gave me a good fight but it got off about 5′ from the boat.  Within an hour we drove about 10 miles up the coast to check out some of the most dramatic surf-shorelines.  By the time we arrived there, the winds were howling and the rollers were beating on the shorelines.  We had a chance to fish, but the conditions were too rough and murky, so we ended up enjoying a few hours of site-seeing.  If you love to fish, site-see, enjoy gourmet meals, golf and trophy fishing, Serena Residences and Cardon Resort in conjunction with El Salto Adventures offers combination trips that will meet all of our needs in a wonderful part of Mexico.

Shot another Trophy Mackerel and Jack TV show at Serena Residences, Mazatlan, Mexico.
Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Our TV shoot started early again today to try and get some productive fishing in before the forcasted, strong winds picked-up.  We headed out of the harbor at 6:15 am and started trolling with the Rapala X-Rap #12 as soon as we met the open water.  Ocean rollers were already starting to break along he shoreline and we decided to head toward the 3-islands that are a well known landmark in front of Mazatlan, Mexico.  It took a couple of hours before we found the fish and suprisingly enough, we caught our first Spanish Mackerel right in front of the harbor entrance.  We kept the first fish so that the staff at Serena Residences could prepare it for us at lunch.  The Mackerel was a sign of good things to come.  Within  1hr. we spotted flocks of Pelicans and diving birds that were grouped together just off the beach.  This signaled that they were waiting for gamefish to push the baitfish to the surface.  Lewis, our guide quickly maneuvered the boat towards the birds and immediately we spotted hundreds of 4-5 lb. Jacks break the surface feeding on baitfish.  The excitement was fast and furious with fish and birds trying to feed on the frantic baitfish.  We managed to hook-up about 5-Jacks before the school disappeared again.

Besides the in-shore fishing, my wife Barbara and I also took some time to check out the Marina Golf Mazatlan course located right in front of Serena Residences.  The course is brand new and has only been open for a year.  It’s in great shape and we are looking forward to playing a couple of rounds there before we leave Mexico.

If you are looking for a Mexican getaway that offers luxurious accommodations, 5-star cuisine, world class saltwater fishing and world class largemouth bass fishing on El Salto with El Salto Adventures, a championship 18-hole golf course that is a few hundred yards away, make sure to check-out Serena Residences and Cardon Resort.  You may just discover the ultimate fishing & relaxing vacation spot!!

Fishing Report for Smithers, Terrace, Kitimat and Prince Rupert, BC.
Monday, February 22nd, 2010

noel_gyger_graphicWeather is good. It feels like spring even though we are still in the middle of winter.  We will take it.  Lots of folks are heading out for some winter Cutthroat Trout, Dolly Varden Char and Steelhead fishing with both fly and conventional gear. The water is extremely low.  The fish are spooked with the bright sunny days so a stealthy approach is needed to catch them.  The upper end of the Zymoetz (Copper) River is closed to angling (as of December 31, 2009) to protect the “wintering over” wild Steelhead. To be clear just the upper reaches of the river are closed but one still may angle on the very low end, just make sure you fish below the boundary at the first canyon.  I heard Steelhead fishing is good, especially on the fly rods.  Trout and Dolly Varden Char are also being caught. The Kalum River is open to angling all winter.  I have heard of some good Steelhead catches but the boys had to work hard for them.  It is mostly walk and wade as the water is way too low for a jet boat.  The Kitimat River is in good shape and is open all winter for fishing. Cutthroat Trout are the usual target but a few Steelhead have been hooked also. Need some high water to bring in more Steelhead.

We took a break from the trophy largemouth bass fishing and went Ocean Kayaking at Cardon Resort, Mexico.  Sergio Castro, Partner in www.serenaresidences.com and Cardon Resort, decided to get some exercise and do some Ocean Kayak fishing right in front of Cardon Resort.  We really enjoyed our time on the water and fished the many reefs and beach shoreline for about a 2 mile stretch.  We ended up catching a variety of fish that included; Porgy, Snapper, Trigger Fish, and Grunts.  We also watched as local “panga” fishermen were also catching fish using traditional  hand-lines.  Cardon Resort offers excellent summer surfing conditions and winter saltwater fishing and some of the best trophy largemouth bass fishing in Mexico.  If you would like to book a trip, just contact either Serena Residences or Cardon Resort (above).

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

My wife Barbara and I just experienced the best top-water fishing for trophy largemouth bass of our lives.  Staying at Cardon Resort, Mexico and fishing El Salto lake, we used the Rapala Skitter Pop to catch big bass all day long.  Most of the time we were making short casts within 1′ of the shoreline dodging standing trees and concentrating on getting a big fish to explode on our baits.  We caught most of out trophy bass fishing small creeks and bays that are plentiful on El Salto.

Just shot a trophy Jack & Roosterfish TV show at Serena Residences, Mexico.
Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Our persistency and hard work is paying-off.  We just finished trolling right in front of Mazatlan, Mexico with Rapala X-Raps #12 and we are catching trophy Roosterfish in the 20-25 lb. range and big jacks, right off the beach.  In-fact, most of the morning we were just spotting large schools of 50-100 Jacks feeding on the surface and we started casting Rapala X-Raps #12 and before you could crank the handle more than a couple of times, a big Jack would “torpedo” for our lure and than put on a fabulous fight.  If you love the idea of staying at a World Class Resort and fishing for a variety of saltwater fish and the biggest largemouth bass in Mexico, make sure to check-out www.serenaresidences.com and their Cardon Resort fishing packages today!!
