Saugeen River, ON Update.
Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

wayne_sheridan_graphicWayne Sheridan reports: Lake effect snow squalls keep coming off the Great Lakes, causing hazardous driving conditions in the Grey-Bruce area. Ice fishing has started on some of the shallower lakes with Lake Simcoe reporting perch fishing has started.  Lake Simcoe Ice Conditions: Gilford Side 8-17 inches, Virginia Beach 6-14 inches, Big Bay Pt 6-12 inches of snow and ice. Be careful around river and lake shores, ice will form on the banks overnight and snow will obscure river bank edges.  Best bait is minnow lures as most of the minnows have gone to their winter hibernation locations and single egg presentations.  Everyone at Canadian Angling wishes you a Happy New Year.

Terrace, BC Tributary Update.
Monday, December 28th, 2009

noel_gyger_graphicNoel Gyger reports.  Sunny and windy with high of minus 2. Winter Steelheading is in full swing although the cold weather has slowed it down a bit. Sometimes it only means shorter fishing days but the “determined” fishermen are still getting out there. Some would say they’re “crazy”! The Zymoetz (Copper) River closes to angling above the sign at the transmission line crossing (below Zymoetz Canyon) at the end of the month (January 1 to June 15). So get out and enjoy before the closure. To be clear just the upper reaches of the river are closed one still may angle on the very low end, just make sure you fish below the boundary at the first canyon. The Kalum River is open to angling all winter although access to some pools is difficult as to the extreme low water and snow. The Kitimat River is open all winter also, and if we get some warmer weather fishing for Trout should be OK.

Manistee River, Michigan producing trophy, cold-weather Steelhead.
Monday, December 21st, 2009

winston_big_femaleWinston Seto had a chance to book a guided fishing trip on the Manistee River with his friend Dave.  They went out with Hawkins Outfitters on the Manistee River, Michigan.

Winston reports that the Steelhead fishing remained strong even with dropping water temps and really, really cold mornings. Their day’s start temps were in the single digits, it was a true test of a steelhead heart.  But as the day went along temps improved and some very nice fish came to hand.   Their guide Jon Ray put them on 20-30 fishing spots from their launch which covered approx. 8 miles of downstream river.   Even with freezing cold temperatures they ended-up hooking 16-20 trophy steelhead!

2010 Ontario Fishing Regulations available on-line.
Monday, December 21st, 2009

New fishing regulations for 2010 include:

  • Year-round fishing for crappie, sunfish, yellow perch and northern pike in the Kawartha Lakes area
  • Longer fall seasons for bass and muskellunge in the Kawartha Lakes area
  • Longer winter season for lake trout in the Thunder Bay area
  • Simpler size restrictions for certain species in the Thunder Bay area
  • Forty-two more lake trout and brook trout lakes with extended seasons and/or reduced harvest restrictions.
  • Ontario’s summer Family Fishing Weekend has been extended to a full Family Fishing Week in  July.

The 2010 fishing regulations guide is now available at ontario.ca/fishing.  Printed copies will be available by December 31 at licence issuers and ServiceOntario/Government Information Centres.

Regulations for some species have been revised to ensure fish stocks are sustainable. Anglers are encouraged to check the regulations for their area before they go fishing.

For the first time, the review of regulations benefited from the input of new Fisheries Management Zone Advisory Councils. The councils, composed of local stakeholders, help the Ministry of Natural Resources develop management strategies for their zones.
